Have a single large fluorescent ceiling light in rhe kitchen on a 3 way switch. Would like to change to 4 can type or flush LED lights and stay on 3 way switch.
ОтветитьI have to say, from Australia, i’m so sick of seeing the American standards of using ‘ wing nut ‘ wire joiners , this is the most worst wiring item used regardless of voltage. ‘ pressure ‘ copper expands and contracts and depending on the skill set of the individual, tension and twist applied will vary , and in time become relaxed and set a voltage drop scenario and possible thermal incident ( fire )
And these poor so called joiners / connections allowed in your country , like ‘Scotch locks ‘ in automotive use for joining power supplies , etc… this is the poorest use of way to join 2 or several wires.
Why don’t you use butter field joiners or screw joiners , these ‘ Wing nuts ‘ joiners are so poor and I’m surprised a country like America allows this back ward item to be not banned and used , I laugh at the boxing system and tubing that connects the wiring and how much focus is in that system , but something as simple as joining wires is soooo over looked !
Why did you mention Ceiling fans cannot be installed in this ceiling? How to check if the ceiling is capable to hold a fan?
I also have a condo hence asking.
What does the junction box mount to ?
ОтветитьA land for a radio would do the same thing to test that outlet
Ответитьawesome video and well explained. exactly the same problem i need to resolve in the townhome bedroom
ОтветитьHow to wire a light if the outlet is the one hot not the switch?
ОтветитьIs there a way to add a switch for the light/ceiling fan and keep the existing switch for the outlet? Apparently, in my case the existing switched outlet is needed for a floor lamp - the preference is to retain controlling the floor lamp using the wall switch rather than the floor lamp knob switch which would be an issue when the room is dark.
ОтветитьFinally the video I was looking for.
No attic
No existing wire
The blue boxed used for the led light on the ceiling what did you screw it into?
ОтветитьYou should have slowed down to explain the whole last 3 mins of this video
ОтветитьAs a DIYer myself, I like your laymen speak and how you tackled the project. Well done! I have a ceiling fan project that the wife has bestowed on me - . My outlet and switch situation are similar to yours and thanks for your tips on leveraging the existing switch to control the ceiling fan. My switch is for the wall outlet which I don't need - it's better for my usage to convert the wall outlet to always ON.
ОтветитьWhat if the outlet dont have a ground. Or my aunts house only has those 2 slotted outlets.
ОтветитьHow did you fish the wire though the wall? Were there holes already there?
ОтветитьThis is perfect! Thank you! Now, I know you said this is not necessarily to code, but does anyone know if this IS to code, by chance?
ОтветитьHowd u fix the wall? Any links or videos for that would be appreciated please.
Ответитьproblem is, my condo's ceiling is full concrete
ОтветитьThank you
ОтветитьI thought this video would be helpful, but somehow it wasnt.
ОтветитьOMG like I would ever do this. I almost had a panic attack watching this! hahaha hahaha hahaha hahaha!! I just got a new apartment and it is devoid of can lights. This extremely disappointing as I just moved out of an apartment that had them in ever room and this is a new construction high rise. Kinda regret what I did I can't buy enough floor and table lamps to match the effect of the cans. 🙄😞
ОтветитьI have the same issue in my house. However, I mistakenly fished a 14/3 wire into the switch box and removed the old outlet so now am unsure of which outlet the switch previously powered on. If someone has a way to help, please let me know.
ОтветитьWhy didnt you just get power from the wires connected to the switch seems like you wouldn't have needed to go all the way down to the outlet?
ОтветитьI guess you can’t do this with a regular ceiling light fixture due to the weight, right? I’m going to move a light in my kitchen but it’ll be a standard light. Too heavy for the drywall to withstand.
ОтветитьVery good, the right video I was looking for very informative. Thank you
ОтветитьWhat he did here is the amateur and wrong way of doing it. You don't connect the new lighting wire to the receptacle. You connect it to the light switch and adjust the wiring of the receptacle so that the receptacle will have continuous power. Having a switch-powered receptacle was just a cheap way of wiring new houses where code required a switched light in a room. Builders would install those instead of the added expense of running wiring for a switch-powered ceiling fixture. There is no need for (and it's actually stupid to have) a powered receptacle when or once you have switched-power to the ceiling. With his way, it's more work, more damage, and you still have the stupid switch-powered receptacle,; which is now effectively only going to have power available to it when the ceiling light is on. Poor installation tips. This guy should be run out of business.
ОтветитьI live in an older home that is wired throughout with aluminum wiring. What are your recommendations for adding light fixtures, switches and outlets? Or even just replacing receptacles when the need arises? Thanks
ОтветитьGood video...but as Electrician myself I normally recommend to go to the switch instead of the plug it's a short cut to the power source and it professionally done. Also I would not bother with removing the yellow wiring just wire nut them ... unless you are removing the wires to recycle ♻️ the cooper. 😀

Hello,
Thank you for making these videos. They have very helpful and informative. I have a 2017 home that I want to install recessed lights into the master bedroom. The room has a light switch but it does not power any of the wall receptacles or outlets when I turn the switch on/off. Do you recommend any videos I can watch to trouble shoot this situation or have any suggestions? Thank you
Here’s a tip….hire an electrician to do the job. Why the fuck did you cut the whole top of the wall open? You made more of a mess to put in one light 😂😂😂 Nice “electrician” talk….don’t quit your day job
ОтветитьVery nicely done. Thanks.
Ответитьyou should show or explaine how you wired the wire and how you where able to get all the wires true the wall
ОтветитьRomex 12/2 or 14/2 boss ?
ОтветитьSo this is why you pay someone else to do it.
ОтветитьGreat video. I have a bedroom with no ceiling light and 1 switched outlet. I've often thought of installing a ceiling light in that bedroom. Luckily, I have attic access.
Can you point me to a site that has diagrams showing how, exactly, I can install a ceiling light, as well as changing that 1 outlet from switched to powered all the time? Thanks.
Instead of tapping into the outlet at the bottom, can you do the same at the switch itself if you want to install a ceiling fan with light and control it with the pull chains in the light or add a second switch box next to the original box and use that for the fan (oh, and replace the outlet controlled by the switch so it doesn't depend on the switch?) Thanks.
ОтветитьJust wanted to say thank you 😊 huge help and great tips for me to self install a new ceiling light and connect it to the light switch in my dad’s office. I’m not tool illiterate or don’t have any handy man skills but I’m always super hesitant when it comes to working with anything electrical. I followed your advice and instructions and was able to complete it all by myself! Woot woot!! My dad is 75 and an amputee so we moved in with him and my mom two years ago to help out caring for him and their home. Any project that I or my husband can do ourselves is an huge help too since they’re both retired on a fixed income. I subscribed and plan on using more videos in the near future to help with fixing, updating and upgrading their home with making it easier and more accessible for my dad 💜🖤
ОтветитьHey Scott. Great instructional video. Here is a question for a similar situation. We live in a bilevel. In the downstairs family room there is no ceiling fixture of any kind and no wall switch. It does have four or five wall outlets. The room is quite dark year-round so we rely on table lamps. We'd like to install a ceiling light of some kind and change out the outlets to modern ones. Is there a way to do the ceiling light and switch by branching off the outlet wiring?
ОтветитьNew subscriber. Yay! Time to learn
Ответить👍👍🌹🌹
ОтветитьIs there a way to do this if there is a room located above the room I’m trying to put new lighting in?
ОтветитьDid you have to get a permit to do that job of running new wiring and light?
ОтветитьThanks! This was really helpful. I’m still struggling a bit because I want to do what you just did in this video but also add a 3-way switch into the equation, so having 2 switches that control the new installed light while leaving the power outlets always hot
ОтветитьI need to replace the blue part that was installed for a pendant light, (it cracked) what is the blue part called?
ОтветитьI wish more DIY'ers would steer away from doing lights in the center of the room. There are so many lighting options today. The poor illumination and shadowing of center room lighting makes the extra work of canless recessed or sconce lighting well worth it.
ОтветитьCan I ask how old the home your working on is?
ОтветитьHow much around it cost to do a job like that?
ОтветитьThanks again. What did you screw the light’s junction box to?
ОтветитьIf you precut your drywall patch pieces and then trace them on your wall and use an oscillating tool to cut out your access hole. That way you dont have to cut your drywall to size, it just fits perfectly
ОтветитьNice work. I'm making a video installing 6 recessed can lights in a basement. I like you approach in your wiring technique. I use a multi-tool with a drywall blade. Makes a nice clean hole. I'm lucky though. I have access to the ceiling thru the closet under the stairs. Very professional and you explained on detail what you were doing. I'm just getting ideas how to do my video. Thank you and keep up the good work
