Adding up to what was accurately said, the Inca empire was conquered only with the help of the other nations like the huanca, cañari or chchapoya who believed would to be liberated. They provided food and thousands of warriors for the battles. Francisco Pizarro married the daughter of the Huanca ruler. Spaniards were very smart on letting this people fight with each other

The Spanish alone did not conquered the Inca by themselves!!!! The Chanca, The Cañairi, Black slaves and others sided with the spanish and 260 spanish soldiers plus tens of thousands of native armies conquered the Inca

Truth is that history of the Americas is only recorded from after all the different famines have taken place, so really the only way we can learn more about the past cultures is through archaeology, and archeology is limiting in that it can’t prove a negative without evidence. So the narrative usually lacks behind the sciences. I always take the written accounts of cultures in America post contact with a grain of salt, because they were already going through population collapse, and thus there culture had already dramatically shifted.

The word “colony” is inacurate. The Spaniards incorporated the new territories right away as kingdoms, equal to all other territories of the King such as Castille, Aragon, Navarre, Sicily, Grenade, Naples, etc.

Thank you Dr. Sowell for telling us a great story with unbiased and accurate flow. For those interested in the topic will find another book “Guns, Germs, and Steel” by Jarrod Diamond, equally fascinating. As per Dr Diamond Pizzaro though illiterate had access to books and documents through catholic priests and ship navigation crew members. Some of these books had taught pizzaro that native soldiers will not select new leader or king as long as the current king is alive. This is why Spaniards would catch the leader or king, but instead of killing him right away, hold him captive. This technique allowed 250+ Spaniards to keep 80,000 native Indian soldiers, from attacking them. Yes the books and detailed documentation, map making etc were all highly valued among Europeans in 15th century onwards while the rest of the world was mainly relying on word of mouth for most the knowledge transfer. If you ask me the habit of documenting everything in “books” truly made them the top leaders of the world. Or in other way it was the lack of documented knowledge or books that most of the world lost to west European powers.

Indians? Incas were not Indians.

They landed first in Santa Marta Colombia.. where they found a civilization for or advanced than ANYTHING in Europe.... within 100 years they decemaited any evidence of it....No genetic history of the original peoples.....ZERO

It is important to note that the Inca had a written writing system made from rope. The problem was when the Spanish conquered the are, the “writing” fell into obscurity.

It's interesting how we tend to think of cooler countries being more prosperous and advanced, but amongst the Native America, the opposite was true. Their most powerful civilizations and civilization centers were all in the tropics.

Pizzaro was a literate man... he was not a moron and in all expeditions there were monks who were very intellectual and wrote about the peoples in America. There is a reason why Spain printed the first books and dictionaries from native languages earlier than the English could print a copy of their on dictionary.

I love how Sowell just gives you the facts and does not take a side, we need more teachers like this in Canada.

I’m Peruvian, all of this is 100% accurate. I’ll add that the Spanish made some effort to give native Peruvians the ability to blend into their culture to the point that some even married them and became royalty. This is where the Mestizos race began to exist, the combination of both races. The daughter of Francisco Pizarro and a native Peruvian woman even went back to Spain to have a life of royalty and luxury. It’s all very interesting. But yeah, the Spaniards colonization was brutal and excesses were commited.

With many practical cultures the abstraction of written language is absent. The Quippu is a three dimensional representation of language using COLORED knotted threads. It's use for numerical record was first discovered,more recently its wider use as a general language interpreted. Unfortunately few Quippu exist.

With all due respect Mr Sowell you failed to mention the megalithic works that the Inca found and built their empire on. Built thousands of years before the Inca existed.
