Doing my home hair color as I’m watching this. The last time I had my hair highlighted was about 4 months ago, I didn’t like how it came out,so I decided to color it at home. I chose L’Oréal
Excellence #6 Light Brown. It’s always so hard to choose a color, my roots are dark , but hair always looks lighter and brassy. I hope it comes out okay, I haven’t colored my own hair in years!

How do you know when a box dye has expired?

After watching this video I bought a tint brush , hair clips , dye bowl and water spray bottle . I followed your instructions and my hair color turned out really well . I have a more even color on all the hairs . I used to have lighter roots and darker ends . Using the brush to apply the color to the roots , then the last 5 minutes spraying the middle and ends with a little water before applying the color really did the trick !!! Thank you .

I’m a natural redhead who now has a lot of gray patches. This is the same box color and brand that I use and my hair comes out WAAAAY better than any of the 10 professional colorists I’ve gone to over the past several years. But now that I have a lot of gray I use the 6R root touch up with 30 drops of Gray Magic on just the roots to cover all the gray because my gray is very resistant. Once that’s processed, I wash and dry my hair. Then I apply the regular 6R all over from root to tip. Let process, then wash, dry and style. Looks amazing every time and no one would ever guess it’s box color. Saves me thousands of dollars and I never have to worry that my will turn out terrible again.

So Gabi you taught me something! I have always been taught that you can never put any kind of red hair color on roots for grey coverage because it will give you Hot Roots! Your thoughts??

I'm a natural ginger and I was looking for a 2000's Cameron Diaz Blonde, so I bought a dye box and was pretty much about to make a mess, thank god I found this video, it's been about 3 hours since I dyed and it looks just what I was hoping for. Ah it is so nice to see you and other hair dressers addressing this issue without judgement. I've done both, getting coloured at hairdresser and on my own. I can honestly say that my personal experience was the price point i had to go to, to find a hair dresser that did an amazing job of my hair was over $500 AUD. Now I'm living in the UK that price point seems similar and when i did treat myself the hairdresser scalp bleached my hair and it was yellow/orange (hot roots) in a week and my hair started falling out! I'm now turning ro videos like this to save my money and return to doing my hair on my own without damaging it.

My wife just paid $180 for a cut and dye at a salon and they absolutely ruined it. She wanted brown with deep burgundy highlights and a trim with her hair down to collar bone length. They cut her long hair above her shoulders and dyed it BLAZE ORANGE. When the stylist turned her around to see it in the mirror the started crying and said she looked like a Chucky doll. She cried for the next 5 hours straight. I can’t help how short she cut it, but this video helped me a lot and I just finished successfully re-dying her orange hair to a deep dark black cherry that she is very happy with.

Some people have to dye hair at home for health reasons! I am so glad you are helping others by putting this tutorial out there!

I had a major fuck up doing my hair at home and had to cut it extremely short like a boy. It may happen to anyone just cause hair changes , so if it does then don’t feel alone or silly for not spending big money, it’s just something we have to admit and learn and continue best we can. It can feel embarrassing but there’s nothing to be ashamed of, very short hair just is part of the journey for a while now.

Wow, I am blown away by this video as I only thought you were a fabulous make-up artist, and now to know your are a hairdresser too, blessings on you girl, I love your videos even more now :) I just went 3 weeks ago and had my hair colored at a salon, but already the roots are showing so I bought a full size box to get the roots covered till my next appt. so glad I watched this video as I probably would've done the whole head instead of just the roots. Exactly girl! I was wondering why you took a moment of silence too be put down by other beauticians. Like you said not everyone can afford to go to a salon & get their hair colored. Especially if you have long thick hair. I took cosmetology in high school due to a car accident I was unable to become a beautician. However when I use to dye my hair I would buy the dye from Salleys. I haven't done this in a long time & was wondering if box dyes have gotten better. So I decided to try one. I'm very thankful for video & I'm sure many others are too.

but, what if your hair is already colored? dont you have to choose a color that is based on the current color not the natural since that is already colored?

I discovered your channel a few months ago. It's so refreshing to see a real hair dresser addressing box dye. The pros and cons, etc. Your client looks so beautiful. Thank you for all your tips and help because people really are going to use box dye for whatever their own reasons are. I used to save up to get my hair cut and just dye my own hair because I had a bad experience at a salon with a specialist dying my hair and causing chemical burns. I think this video is so helpful for many clients who are shamed for using box dyes.

These are great tips and well-informed. I see why she is stuck on that box dye; it give her the results she wants, it's extremely affordable, & it looks awesome on her! Unfortunately, not everyone is going to have great results with box dye, for the reasons you mentioned.

In Australia to get your hair cut and coloured at a hairdresser youre looking at at least $500.00 these days, and then you have to get touch ups. The only people who get their hair coloured at a salon these days are only used by hairdressers, friends and family of hairdressers and rich people.
Like if youre a salon owner and wondering why youre not getting any business anymore thats why!
Honestly i cant find a local salon that will do a cut that is under $80.00.

Your explanation of “they may not have the means to do salon quality,” is amazing. I’d love to be able to have my hair done at a salon. But the last time I had it professionally done, it was $250. That’s my electric bill and gas bill for a month together. Some of us don’t want to have grey hair in their early 30’s, but still want to be able to put food on the table, heat in our homes during the winter.

Brilliant demonstration. Only thing, like blow drying, it's not so easy doing your own hair, angles of brush etc are different. Nothing beats the luxury of going to the hairdressers but like you say there are lots of factors. Many thanks.

Hi Gabi, I have a simple (or maybe not :)) question and I would be very grateful if you could answer it. I have fine wavy/curly hair and would like to dye it. I have been dying it with a natural color with a very low developer but i am not happy with it. But i am also afraid to use „normal“ box dye because some people in the curly community think that u should not dye curly hair at all because it is dry already. So does that mean if you happen to have fine curly hair, that you just cant do anything about the color??
