The man across from Serling is James Dickey, author of Delverance.

He fires up a cig at interview opening and fills the studio with smoke .... then schools the audience on race relations , what a forward looking soul. What an ICON !!

I like Rod Sterling and Hogan's Heros. There's a time n place for straight plays and theater of the absurd.

Rod held up a mirror to show us ourselves. To show us the truth, the zeitgeist - good or bad. No one has done it better since....

He’s been gone so long now. But never has his voice been louder. His ideals character and voice still rings strong and clear thru the decades. He was one of only a handful of full that used tv to cut hatred of any kind to the bone. And he did this not with a cannon. But a pen. And dose it thru the hearts and minds. We cant stop hatred of any kind through hatred. He dose it thru the will of each individual. Thru story’s that respect the observer will of discernment. I’m sadden that the powers on high so silently cut his voice. And so grateful the voices of his work are even louder now. We are better from his intentions!

Admittedly, Rod Serling was wise beyond his years...the fact he could point out society's unspoken fears, prejudices, and ignorance during this time is impressive.

If we are indeed a global community, there is only one minority. The European race. That is not racist. That is not bigoted. That is pure fact. Most of the 7+ billion people on this planet are Asian, Negro or Indian (India). I don't say this as "white pride" or anything like that. It is just fact.

It's a bummer...this would have been an interesting conversation. But, James Dickey was cut out of it, same with the host. Nice points by Serling, but it would have been good to hear counterpoints or supportive commentary by the other two.

The WW2 generation is hard for us to fathom today. My wife's grandfather (died 1989) had one of his brothers killed in WW2. He refused to buy a German or Japanese car for the rest of his life.

I always thought that the Science fiction of Twilight Zone and Star Trek was trying to say all the things that drama with a contemporary setting couldn't. So yes Mr Serling, on some level your Buck Rodgers story did get through to me.

Rod Serling and the writers of Twilight Zone were allegorical geniuses in regard to the social, political and cultural zeitgeist and the damnedest thing is the longevity and honesty of those messages are as true today as they were half a century ago. He would be appalled to see the closure of libraries and the seizure of books and the dismissal of critical race theory. That being said if he were to see tik-tok the and rampant representation of the extreme left woke movement he might just hope it all ends up like "Time Enough At Last". He was a Chesterfield smoking man's man after all.

The problem with asking television (or film, or media in general) to take a stand on an issue is that such entertainment itself is, by definition, a distinct and purposeful engineered reality. Props, sets, actors, scripts, sound management... every aspect purposefully done for narrative flow. I greatly admire and respect Rod Serling's work and accomplishments, but part of me wishes that he (and perhaps a whole generation) would have kept the notion in mind that media and reality are not the same thing and never have been.

His comments about the guilt one should or shouldn't feel when watching the cavalry force indigenous people from their land immediately made me think. While we needn't feel personally guilty (having not done it ourselves), we should acknowledge that the wealth that most Americans have now was stolen from its rightful owners then. From the genocide of indigenous people whose lands we now live on, to the enslavement of black people on whose whip-scarred backs our young nation's economy was built, to the exploitation of Asian railroad workers who helped to connect all the parts of the country in the 1800s, Americans...particularly White Americans...today enjoy a disparity of prosperity because of yesterday's atrocities.
This video has monumentally increased my respect for Rod Sirling...and made me eager to re-watch his series, specifically in search of social metaphor (as later happened on Star Trek).
