Wow!! So this man originally sang many of my favorite songs. Im so stiled to have discovered a new (to me) artist. WhereDid You Sleep Last Night? is my favorite song Nirvana does and i knew it was a cover but i had never heard the original until about 5 minutes ago. So i then looked up Leadbelly and i am amazed! This man was most definitely ahead of his time

How do more people not know him, i can't understand, so my 15 year old nephew thought this was a new song showed him this and the animals he was gobsmacked and that it was recorded in prison and he was a slave he said it was great Simon so proud of him he understood leadbelly version

OK, I just learned that this song was not actually written by the 1960's group, The Animals. It's a traditional song that long predates them

I know he's a legend, but he sings off key and the guitar work is sloppy and rhythmically erratic. Ultimately, this performance and the arrangement are at best amateurish and undisciplined.

When my gr4andfather, heard The Animals cover of this song, he just laughed and told me he first heard this song in New Orleans around 1916.... He said it was a urban myth about a Dope House in The French Quarter...
