This scene was the last possible moment to set up a redemption arc for Neegan. This moment, when he confirms there is NO chance for any kind of peace, set the plot in one direction...and when the writers tried to swerve away from that and redeem Neegan anyway, the whole damn show fell to pieces.

This is actually the alternative ending. Carl actually lives in one of the deleted scenes. Its called Walking Dad. Negan actually saves Carl from infection.

I know it’s upsetting that they killed Carl off for such a dumb reason and that we didn’t get to see him grow up. However, I like that his death is what allowed the group to stop the war and bring about the new era of peace. It sucks they killed Carl off but at least they had him be the catalyst for the end of the war.
