I like your idea, but a string of this has already been tested. When one of the astronauts had sneezed and the bacteria had died. Then when they brought it back, it was alive again. Although it's not exactly the same it would have the same affect. The bacteria would come die off, or go into a hibernation state, and come back to life when sent back to Earth.

cool... looking forward to the results... i am just guessing the pure stress of the environment makes those microbes more virulent. (you know different kinds of radiation, micro gravity) So i am guessing they will all perform similarly (the ones that went to space)... of course, i didn't study the subject like you guys did.... More reason for me to be interested in the results...

Don't forget that time will be slightly different for the samples in space vs. the samples on earth due to the speed/higher position in the gravitational field. Not that that will make much of a difference...

Didn't anyone learn anything from Michael Crichton's Andromeda series. Sending a bacterial culture out into space to get mutated and fed by ridiculously high radiation is a blueprint for the destruction of humankind

they should make a plant mutating bacteria first... before making zombies. . :D
