Why on earth did the go with AR10 pattern mags and not FN mags (dual use with the SCARs) ?

I hope that you don't need a hammer to field strip it, if your ever out in the field, doing live ops and the weapons needs to be stripped, for whatever reason.

Honestly I think this gun won the contest because from a handling standpoint it’s just like an AR. Same controls. The other guns were a bullpup and the other one was just really weird.

Heavier ammo.

Heavier gun.

More recoil.

Less ammo carrying capacity.

Costlier ammo;

Ladies and gentlemen, we did it! We did the M14 all over again!!!

I was issued an M16 in Vietnam and for that war, it was an adequate round, although I guess I would have preferred more power. When I got home and went deer hunting, there was no way I wanted such a puny round for taking deer on the open prairie, my round of choice was the 25-06, it was much more powerful but maintained a very flat shooting long range capability, topped with a Buris 3X9 power scope made a wonderful hunting rifle that provided me with sausage for many years. My old Remington is still being used every year by one of my nephews who begged the rifle off me when I decided to hang up my hunting gear. This new round resembles the 25-06 and should make a great man stopper. Luck to those soldiers who have the opportunity to use it in battle.

i hate it, you have a time to adopt a rifle that fixes all the problems with the old rifle and you make it a clone of the old rifle. still no active dust cover like the scar/g36, and that awful charging handle placement. I don't care that soldiers weren't used to it. They can adapt. Are they still going to try loading 556 because the caliber isn't the same? of course not.

More than double the weight of an M4? Half again heavier than grand-dad's M1 Garand? I don't think the ground pounders are going to be excited about that.

Expect the M5A1 to be put on a diet.

Of course the suppressor will have to be carried in a pouch zip-tied shut during training so they can't get lost.

@gabiballetje
@gabiballetje - 15.01.2024 19:52

Operations mostly the same, or easier, shoots well, suppressor seems good, haven't checked how it holds up in long engagements pumping perhaps hundreds of rounds through it as fast as you can, more recoil, less ammo, more stopping and penetration power, and, more weight, even more if you want the same amount of ammo, though you MIGHT not need as much, assuming you get more rounds on target and less bullets per kill, the new scope they might get along with it might help a lot with that, but it isn't holy, especially in all out combat.
You can get used to the more recoil a bit, but the weight and less andheavier ammo man...
That new scope though, hot damn, and it's going to get optionbal upgrades, IR vis etc, sick as fuck.

All this said, i know fuck all, haven't shot many guns, then most of those with practice blanks, i do airsoft, but that's what i am guessing.

That's a really bad idea, using different ammunition for training. What will inevitably happen, is soldiers will receive one ammo for zero and weapons qual and then get handed the "combat" round for combat, with some fat POG Lt. Col to blame. Speaking from experience. We were given M193s for AWQ and M855s in country.

With scopes, and weapons of suitable accuracy, body armor isn't going to do much good when troops can shoot people in the head at 500 yards consistently.

When I see this rifle, it always reminds me something I was taught in the army at the time....If your rifle is trained on a target that the round cannot pierce, you shoot to incapacitate. Aim for the knees, feet or neck to stop them moving before you target to eliminate. While this weapon was designed to pierce modern body armour, a well placed 5.56 can still do the same job, just with a slightly different methodology. I don't doubt that this an interesting development, I cant help but wonder if this is a short term distraction from going further and better than the Spear in it's current form, even if it was just further development of the very same platform. Its very front heavy, it's carrying a lot of weight and the USAF are going to be training their personnel with lower powered training ammo which recoils, performs and impacts differently from the real deal in combat. It will be interesting to see what happens next.

I'm not a fan of Sig. Their crap is WAY overpriced, and the quality and capability in no way justifies that price. I just can't see how these things have any business costing so much more than a freakin SCAR. No way. Somehow, I just can't shake the suspicion that Sig getting all these government contracts isn't quite on the up and up. I smell a rat.

Training with different rifle / ammo is the dumbest idea I can imagine. Train how you fight or you'll fight like you trained. You want troops under contact to be picking up their brass instead of fighting properly.

Seems like it would be detrimental to marksmanship to have soldiers train in the non full pressure round. As in actively making them worse in accuracy with the only benefit being weapon handling drills and live fire and movement skills.

Problem with India is that Indians keep doing test after test after test, but do not start mass production for years.
Whereas other nations do one test, start mass production as XY-1 variant, then do further tests and improvements and manufacture as XY-2 variant....... Whereas in the case of India, tests keep going on endlessly for decades, even when the weapon system is good enough to mass produce ten years ago.

1. Is it really smart to train with ammunition that has different external ballistics than the ammunition you intend to use in action?

2. Personally having had the G3A5 (with lenghtened stock) and the C7A1 issued I would love to get the G3 back, but maybe its just me being an old nostalgic fart yearning for my youth. And maybe not - most others around me prefer the C8 to the C7, because they look cooler and weigh a little less, but to me its weird that they dont care about the reduced performance by using shorter barels than the proper 20" - especially given the large gap at close range where the C7 will penetrate body armour and the C8 won't.
