Are the pieces in the A section expected to be performed at these speeds? Will i lose a lot of marks if im slower but still accurate in terms of rhytmn and dynamics?

If I have to choose my favorite piece from each list, it will be:

A1
B3
C1

Fourth Piece: C3

Who's with me +1
If not +2

Tbh every single piece in this set is awesome, i don't even know how to choose if i were to take this syllabus

Hi! Is it okay if, for the digital practical exam, if I selected all four pieces from the ABRSM Piano Exam Pieces book? I know that the fourth piece can be my own choice piece, but I don't have access to any other books or pieces recommended by the extensive list given by ABRSM. I only have the book that has the 9 pieces.

@kateji5405 Regarding errors when repeating, as you know piano playing is a very subtle combination of eye, brain, ear and finger co-ordination.

When you are learning a new piece, the brain works the eyes hard for input and the fingers wait to be told what to do by the brain. Later, as you learn and become more confident, the fingers, through complex muscle repeats, "learn" what to do (like when you walk about, actually constantly throwing yourself forward off-balance, but then the other leg comes along to recover the balance) and with piano-playing the brain is able to reduce the effort required to take information from the eyes and let the fingers take over, requiring only a gentle stimulating from the brain (on tickover, if you like).

In extreme cases, such as with concert pianists, the eyes have no part to play at all and the brain is able to stimulate the fingers through memory alone for hours on end, built by repetition (i.e.practice!). The performer is then able to use that part of the brain that has been freed up to concentrate more on putting emotion into the performance. Your teacher probably says to you "Don't worry about dynamics until you have learned the notes."

With your problem, I suggest you are at the stage when your brain is beginning to trust your fingers but the fingers are not as good as they think they are yet (not enough practice!) and they suddenly panic when they realise they are no longer being spoon-fed by the brain and will have to "think" for themselves. The ears say "That's wrong!" and the fingers send frantic messages back to the brain for help, but sometimes the whole thing crashes and you may even lose your way and stop playing, just because of one wrong note. Sometimes the brain retreats too far and you might suddenly crash! It's all part of the learning process, and a good plan is to always try to be concentrating hard on something, if not the notes anymore then the standard of your performance, to prevent the brain losing the plot. Does your teacher ever say "Concentrate!"?

On the first play the brain is working hard with the fingers, but after a success, it relaxes and lets the fingers take over a little more - you don't always consciously feel this - hence your puzzlement - but mentally that is what's happening.
Notice that the ears are the referee, always checking that the sound is not breaking the rules of the written down music.

Here's a true story about memory:
When I was 8 I was entered in the Wimbledon Music Festival (U.K.) and one of the items I had to play was the set piece - one we all had to play so that the judges could hear who played it best. I knew the piece so well that I could play it off-by-heart, so my father wouldn't let me take the music with me, thinking I would impress the judges more!

That in itself didn't bother me, but unfortunately when I started playing the chief judge had to come over and stop me because I was playing the wrong piece! - it was another one I knew off-by-heart! I could not for the life of me change gear onto the required piece, and with no music to remind me I made several restarts but it always came out as this other piece!

Finally, the judge very kindly leaned over me and started to play it so I could watch. This got me going and all was well after that. I scored 83% for my whole performance, but needless to say I did not win anything!

When I took my Grade 6 exam I played the final piece (which was a bit "modern" for my tastes), and was startled to find that as I finished the examiner was standing right behind me. He leaned over me and said "Had you thought of playing it like this?" and proceeded to play it with a very different tempo and interpretation to mine. I felt I had to reply so said "Not really."
6 weeks later, when my result came through and I was reading the examiner's report on my performance, I suddenly noticed that my examiner had been the composer of the piece!

How long to study grade 4 exam? I had a 20 year break but confidently doing grade 2 and 3 work and have an awesome teacher too.

I play 1hr lesson fortnightly and in addition 2hrs straight per week.

I love A2 A3, B2, C2
But tempted to go off piste with C section and do In Hall of Mountain King from extension options. I find B2 and C2 calm to listen to.

My style of C3 is play it playfully with fast tempo (Very fast) No ritartando at all and equal tempo. The most important is the slur and the accent for me and think about happy children jumping to increase style

I think A2 is very fast and balanced playing in the left hand in the second part and the left hand should be Quiet.

B1 should be natural with no artificial ritartando and do big inhales every bar to get the style and feeling

And these are all my exam songs
