FYI peter the Arab build these doors too low for a reason , I’m the Moroccan culture in the Atlas Mountains this is the way how to build doors making the guest coming to the house head down just in case if there’s any woman in the house the guest can see her when he comes inside and the woman will have time to go inside to hide .

I loved that you really went to lesser known areas in the Middle East! Just wanted to shed some light on the oud, you’re not supposed to smoke it or inhale it, it doesn’t have any narcotic type of effect or anything that will make you high.

Oud is used as incense, homes throughout the Middle East burn it so that the rooms and clothes smell good, so you can imagine that you’ll be breathing a heavy quantity of it regularly and it won’t have an impact on you (it shouldn’t).

For guests it’s offered so that the smell of your meal or whatever was cooked doesn’t stick to you and your clothes (nothing to do with getting high).

I lived in Saudi Arabia (Jubail, Al Khobar, Dharan) for five years 25 years ago and I cannot tell you the stark changes that have taken place in such a short time. I used to look for the moon at night to convince myself that I was not on another planet. Praises to MBS for bringing positive changes to the Kingdom while retaining their unique and unified culture.
