This is my opinion on this case and many others like it. I like many others in the world have multiple diagnosed mental illnesses. I have been diagnosed with mine since I was a child. I too grew up in a bad situation, 1.) where my father was an alcoholic and was very abusive to my mother. My first memory was when I was just a little over a year old and he come busting through the front door and began to beat on my mom. That was just the beginning of my childhood with that. 2.) Child SA.... I dealt with that for a number of years. And when we tried to turn that into CPS they didn't do anything about it. I grew up in a single parent home after the age of 3 because my dad stepped out on us after my sister was born. When I was 8 my dad had his brother try to kidnap my 2 siblings and I. I still to this day deal with PTSD because of what I dealt with as a child. I also have severe anxiety, schizoaffective disorder, and severe depression and agoraphobia. As well as a sensory processing disorder. My belief is people are using the mental health issues as a crutch in most situations. As in this one. He knew what he was doing. He waited for the moment for the officer to pull up to do what he did. He could have done it any time prior if he "wasn't in his right mind" but he had to wait til the officer was there. Reminds me of the case that happened in Australia where the father was supposed to be taking his children to school and it was his daughters first day and instead of doing so he drove over the bridge and sat there for some time (some part of this was caught on dashboard camera) but he took his daughter and did the same as in this video. If they have to sit and think about what they're doing then they are not mad, they're bad. And that's my opinion. Whether or not they have diagnosed mental illnesses. What they did in the moment of the incident is the deciding factor. And the crutch isn't gonna hold them up.

I know people like to try and understand why someone would do something so horrific by saying they had a hard life but I'm tired of that excuse. There's more people than not that had almost the same life and went ahead to break the cycle. This is just an evil POS that did this to hurt the partner and deserves everything that will happen to them in the future.

Having mental illness is NO EXCUSE! I am bipolar, schizophrenic, manic depressive, and have PTSD!! Yes it's difficult to manage but it's never an excuse to hurt children! I was beaten, raped repeatedly, cut on, stabbed, had cigarettes put out on me, poisoned, starved, and shot at for fun from about 7 or 8 till I was 14! I have 2 boys and they're both beautiful and wonderful! I made them both a promise when they were born they'd have a happy childhood and not see or worry about the ugliness I have! We're breaking abusive cycles and generational curses every day here! 💯💯💯💯❤️❤️❤️❤️ So no there's no excuse for anyone's actions! Mental illness is exactly that an excuse never a reason!

I agree 100% with you. Using mental health to get your way or as an excuse doesn't cut it. Neither does blaming your upbringing or abuse. Law and DCFS failed Phobe and her mom. Almost as if they were biased against Michelle. They would follow up on the reports Jon made, but not follow up on any of Michelle's complaints on Jon.

Omg the PragerU sponsored ad is pissing me off. He’s comparing extra time on an LSAT due to disability ( includes learning disabilities) to playing sports in terms of a correct number. He deems it unfair because they got extra time and no one knows who got extra time. So essentially he says that accommodations made on exams for someone who it may just mean that it takes them longer to read therefore it’s unfair that that person got extra time and either makes you less effective at your job ( no, just means that person works 10x harder ) and that they shouldn’t get the same opportunities…. PragerU is so shady in what they talk about…. If this video supports prager U I’m out.

I have a slight correction. Phoebe didn't fall from the bridge or die from falling from the bridge. She was thrown from the bridge and died from being thrown from the bridge. A fall is accidental. This was no accident.

I truly believe he was insane or suffered from some sort of mental break… even her mother said “he loved her so much” the fact that he carried a bible around and thought she needed to “die” or else everyone was going to hell.. is really heartbreaking, and shows the true issues of xqitzophrenia.. I feel he was wrongfully tried. He should’ve been sent to a mental institution

Hi Rachel, I feel so bad for police officers that could not do anything once they located John at the church. It must feel awful for them when there is nothing to take him into custardy, then something like this happens. I know people always blame them or CPS but if nothing appears out of the norm when they visit and go, what do we expect them to do. Obviously if the child is covered in bruises etc then leave them, that they need blaming. Johns Daughter was always happy with her dad and wanted to be with him so it’s hard. I have to say I don’t like that you said it may of been because the mother wanted Phoebe back in her life, that sounds like if she had not wanted to see her Daughter Phoebe would be alive? What a guilty conscience Phoebe’s mom will have. “If only I didn’t”?
Thanks for researching this case, I had not heard of this before. With working and researching these cases you must be shattered at the end of the day. Bless you for doing all this to bring these cases to us. 🐝💐🐝

Sorry, but my gut says he was nuts. All you have to do is LOOK at the dude. The way you described it has me thinking that. Maybe you shouldn't have leaned in on his mental behavior so much lol. I can only go off what I'm hearing. It took them FOUR YEARS to get him competent to stand trial. Prosecutors NEVER want someone who committed of a heinous murder to get off for insanity. Do I trust that they actually thought he was of sound mind when he did it? No. I lean towards he wasn't capable of understanding what he did was wrong.

I don't think we should have a black and white view of legal responsibility or really anything for that matter. I know the human condition makes us naturally want to see retribution and revenge done on someone who breaks the social norms, especially when it comes to physical harm and death of our most vulnerable. I think that in order for us to have a society that is mostly safe for the majority of people and a place of objective justify, however we as a society can't give over completely to this desire. For those who are nuro-typical and have not been exposed to extreme forms of mental illness, I can see how it may feel like a out or something for those who do terrible things. There seems to be a lot of misinformation around how our legal process works in regards to claims of significant mental illness involved in criminal charges. There seems to be this idea that its a comfortable alternative to prison and that they will go to a nice cozy hospital for a few months or years and then be free. The reality is something very different. I work in non-profit, and lots of people i work with have been through many different systems. I have worked with teams to transition people committed to state hospital back to community treatment when they have been deemed safe enough to do so. In all the cases I have had the vast majority were committed (order by the court because they are not capable of making the decision or can be a criminal charge they were found not competent for and committed) by family or mental health workers request. The remaining very tiny (like less than 1%) were criminal charges, but they were not violent felony charges. Those people still had spent many years in the locked crime ward of the state phych hospital (this is not a place that looks like a hospital but very much like a jail) all of them had a mental health court they had to go through for any lessening of restrictions on them at all. They go down in steps that are very small and they are not just let out free. They will likely face supervision of some kind forever. This would not happen if they just got convicted of their crime. Every single one of those I worked with spent more time than the maximum sentences would have been for their crime in the locked facility and far more than a plea deal or the typical sentences are. The same is true for violent felony offenders too. Look at sex crimes like rape or child SA the sentences for such things are nothing like what youd expect. If they get a 15 year sentence that's a longer one and they will be out in 10-13 in harsher places as little as 5 in places. If they were to be deemed insane or not competent they would be unlikely to ever be released and if they were no way would it be just 5yrs later (with a few years probation) it would be decades and likely released to a group home (for people with similar behavior history) or a nursing home at end of life in the unlikely situation it was to the community in their own housing it would still be with strong supervision that would probably never end unless/untill they become completely incapable of harm to anyone (hospice care, paralyzed, end of life, dementia locked facility etc). These are the states that even have a insanity system in the way people think of. Many states only have not competent to stand trial and in those cases they go to locked criminal psyche wards for however long it takes for them to be deemed just sane enough to participate in the trial. If it takes 20 years it doesn't matter they would not be let out they would go to face the trial for the crime they were originally accused of. Lawyers do not try to get their clients to go the insanity route unless they very truly have no alternative because its almost never a lesser consequence for the accused. Not in America at any rate. It is something they will do when the client is truly impossible to participate in their defense or honestly some few Lawyers know that the time they will be kept iut of the community is far more, they know how terrible the crime they did was, and this is not considered a lost case if they're committed so they see it as a way they can get their terrible client away from the community for long-term without having to break their oath to defend them as best as possible. There are some very few people who's mental illness is such they truly don't understand what they did was wrong and/or unjustified. In their mind, what happened was very real to them in that moment. We should have a system that can deal with such situations. We shouldn't put that burden of care on our prisons who are not prepared to deal with such people. It's endangering everyone there and setting up for a situation where they may engage in really terrible human rights violations trying to control the situation they dont have the proper training, specialist, or resources to control. A large % of our incarcerated have some type of mental illness nobody is making the argument any mental health issues should mean you aren't held accountable for criminal behavior. We should do better to give correct information about what the insanity plea really is and what happens if they are deemed not fit or insane.
