The time in which Portugal and Spain divided the world in half, times that won't return anymore.

Wonderful tv series, that shows a part of History that certain countries try to hide, when Portugal, followed by Spain, were the richest countries in Europe and even the World.

Mind that Blackthorne's explanation of the 1494 Treaty of Tordesillas here is wrong - an interpretation that continues to make its way and needs to be clarified.

The Treaty was NOT to sanction that Portugal had the right to conquer and rule half the world, and Castille (there was no Spain, yet) the other half - which is as impractical and retarded as it sounds.

This Treaty was born following previous disputes over discovered lands - such as the Canary Islands and Colombo's reaching of the Caribbean - that were mediated by the Papacy, with different levels of success.

What it established between the two Iberian States was spheres of influence, where the other party was forbiden to interfere. That's it. As so, West of the Tordesillas Meridian, Portugal could not set foot, discover new land, found colonies or trading posts, etc; East of this Meridian, Spain couldn't do it either.

How does a single country claim ownership of another country as done in that era? How did Spain and Portugal plan to take lands that had countries like India and China as close neighbours?

Underrated writing moment: When Blackthorne says, "The earth is round--like a fruit" and then pauses to check Toranaga's reaction to see if it unsettles him or not because he knows that could be life changing news, but Toranaga is so inscrutable he has to hurry to avoid the appearance of patronizing him.

There is just so much to unpack there.

This makes me wonder
If William Adams didn’t go to Japan and build his relationship with Tokugawa

Maybe Japan would have ended up like The Philippines,Cuba or Mexico

And also they didn’t also the Dutch or the British to have too much control
So Japan wouldn’t have ended up like India,Indonesia or Burma

Toranaga (Tokugawa) probably thought of Nobunaga at Okehazama when Blackthorne said "...Unless I win."

Portugal and Spain were in 1600 the same country, and both countries had experience battling several Asian nations. Spain even had first-hand experience with Japanese tactics and philosophy in 1582 during the Cagayan battles in Philippines. By then, the Japanese fleet was almost nonexistent. All attempts of the English to battle the Spanish and/or Portuguese outside the North Sea had failed (only Francis Drake took a small, unfortified population in Panama - Nombre de Dios, where he would die). So the English proposing the Japanese to form a military navy to confront the Spanish and Portuguese is absurd. Adams help build a merchant fleet (the Red Seal ships), not a military one.

Also this meeting would have happened in 1600 (if Blackthorne is a representation of William Adams). By that time Portugal and Spain were the same country (Iberian Union, 1580-1640). So England was not only confronting Portugal.

It's not true that the Magellan route was secret information to all external powers. Once the Magellan-Elcano expedition arrived to Sevilla in 1521, Antonio Pigafetta published his diaries where he had detailed information about latitudes, coasts, weather, and navigation times from one place to another. That information was freely released across Europe and that's why pirate Drake could reach southern Patagonia in 1578.

Catholics vs Protestants??? The Magellan _ Elcano expedition was always about how to create a commerce route to Asia for the Spaniards because Portugal has his own surrounding Africa. The rest of Europe by that time were behind in the edge of exploration.

I love his smile at the end and considering what he planned and did to Blackthorne throughout the show. That one line "unless i win" really struck a chord with Toranaga and probably was the moment he knew and wanted Blackthorne around. "I like the cut of his jib" is probably what he said to himself as he did that sly smile.

I like that Blackthorne basically omits Europe in the map he draws. Like he's cautious enough to remember not to spill a bunch of valuable intelligence to a foreign power.

Actually no. The Portuguese system was based on establishing bases and imposing the commerce and production of what they wanted, but that didn't mean controlling the land with Catholic kings. They wanted the resources and the monopoly of commerce, but had little interest in establishing their own governments as long as their own needs were met.

This is another anti Catholic show that shows the Brits as superior and somehow ethical
