১৯৯৬ সালের ১৫ ফেব্রুয়ারি অনুষ্ঠিত নির্বাচনে বিএনপি ২৮৯টি আসন লাভ করে। কিন্তু এই নির্বাচনে বিরোধী দলগুলো অংশগ্রহণ করেনি। আওয়ামী লীগ, জাতীয় পার্টি ও জামায়াতে ইসলামী নির্বাচন বর্জন করে। তারা নির্বাচনে কারচুপির অভিযোগ করে।

এই নির্বাচনের পর বিএনপির নেতৃত্বে খালেদা জিয়া প্রধানমন্ত্রী হিসেবে শপথ নেন। কিন্তু নির্বাচনের ফলাফলের বৈধতা নিয়ে দেশে ব্যাপক সমালোচনা ও বিক্ষোভ শুরু হয়। আওয়ামী লীগ ও জাতীয় পার্টি নির্বাচনের ফলাফল বাতিলের দাবিতে আন্দোলন শুরু করে।

আন্দোলনের চাপে ১৯৯৬ সালের ৩০ মার্চ খালেদা জিয়া সংসদ বাতিল করেন। তিনি বলেন, নির্বাচনের ফলাফলের বৈধতা নিয়ে সন্তুষ্টি না থাকায় সংসদ বাতিল করা হয়েছে।

খালেদা জিয়ার এই পদক্ষেপের ফলে দেশে নতুন নির্বাচনের পথ খুলে যায়। ১৯৯৬ সালের ২৩ জুন অনুষ্ঠিত নির্বাচনে আওয়ামী লীগ ২৯৮টি আসন লাভ করে। ফলে শেখ হাসিনা দ্বিতীয়বারের মতো প্রধানমন্ত্রী হিসেবে শপথ নেন।

খালেদা জিয়ার ভূমিকা নিয়ে বিভিন্ন মত রয়েছে। কেউ কেউ বলেন, তিনি নির্বাচনের ফলাফল বাতিল করে দেশের গণতন্ত্রকে রক্ষা করেছেন। আবার কেউ কেউ বলেন, তিনি নির্বাচনের ফলাফল বাতিল করে আওয়ামী লীগকে ক্ষমতায় আসার সুযোগ দিয়েছেন।

খালেদা জিয়ার ভূমিকা সম্পর্কে নিম্নলিখিত দুটি দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি উল্লেখযোগ্য:

প্রথম দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি: এই দৃষ্টিভঙ্গির সমর্থকরা বলেন, খালেদা জিয়া নির্বাচনের ফলাফল বাতিল করে দেশের গণতন্ত্রকে রক্ষা করেছেন। তারা বলেন, নির্বাচনে কারচুপির অভিযোগ ছিল। বিরোধী দলগুলো নির্বাচন বর্জন করেছিল। এই অবস্থায় সংসদ বাতিল করা ছাড়া অন্য কোনো উপায় ছিল না।

দ্বিতীয় দৃষ্টিভঙ্গি: এই দৃষ্টিভঙ্গির সমর্থকরা বলেন, খালেদা জিয়া নির্বাচনের ফলাফল বাতিল করে আওয়ামী লীগকে ক্ষমতায় আসার সুযোগ দিয়েছেন। তারা বলেন, বিএনপি নির্বাচনে জয়ী হলে আওয়ামী লীগ সরকারকে ক্ষমতাচ্যুত করার জন্য আন্দোলন চালিয়ে যেত। এই আন্দোলনে দেশ অস্থিতিশীল হয়ে পড়ত। তাই খালেদা জিয়া সংসদ বাতিল করে আন্দোলন থামানোর চেষ্টা করেছেন।

খালেদা জিয়ার ভূমিকা সম্পর্কে কোনো নির্দিষ্ট সিদ্ধান্তে আসা কঠিন। কারণ, এই ঘটনার বিভিন্ন দিক বিবেচনায় নিতে হয়।

The way khaleda zia's BNP caused trouble back in 2001-2005, we remember every bit of it. In my home state of Assam ULFA had a free run. So with due respect to all my Bangladeshi neighbours, if your democracy is a threat to my existence, buddy you will not have any democracy then, unless BNP comes to our camp.

I will be honest, if you want democracy back then make the BNP to either be neutral or not to overlook India's interests. Else we will keep shoving the Awami league with or without Hasina down your throat and you wont be doing shit about it. 2030 and beyond, as our own economy grows and we gain strength, no western power will be able to preach democracy without our permission in South Asia.
China too works best with dictators, so us and the Chinese share a common interest.
