2 things can be true. Fla was the best team and it wasnt close. The Leafs were clearly the closest of the 4 teams to play Fla and there were clear markers in that series where they couldve beat them. The same cannot be said for the other 3 teams.

I dislike the whole game 5+7 story. It ignores game 4 where only the Leafs goalie showed up. Game 4 was also quite embarrassing and they should have lost by more. So really the leafs showed up for 4 games in a 7 game series. Pretty hard to win anything that way, not impossible, but really hard.

The Leafs are definitely better than the Oilers as they have a record of 12-3-2 against them in the past 5 years. If the Oilers had been in the Leafs' division, they'd have been out in the 2nd round vs. the Panthers and the Leafs would've likely been in the final instead from the west. Also, the GF and GA in the two series were very similar. The Leafs scored 17 goals and had 26 against (7 games) while the Oilers scored 17 goals and had 28 against (6 games). The Leafs had their two 6-1 loses to the Panthers but the Oilers had a 6-1, 5-1 and 5-2 loss as well. No-one can say that the Leafs were the second best team in the NHL this season because they took the Panthers to 7 games but they're definitely better than Edmonton over the past number of years.
