Should've mentioned M1 Garand's influence on AK-47's design, though 🤷‍♂️

The actual problem with Type 1 AKs was that it had a stamped receiver, but the stamped receivers it originally had had a very high rejection rate (they would explode, break apart, warp from the heat, stuff like that), so they changed it to milled receivers until the technology was advanced enough where they could realistically stamp the receivers.

Milled means that the receiver is cut out of a solid block of steel. Milled receivers are heavier than stamped ones, but also more durable. Stamped means that the receiver is folded into shape from a sheet of metal. Lighter weight and cheaper to make, but until '59 wasn't really economically viable (I think because the steel that was used just wasn't tough enough, the alloy wasn't advanced enough for stamping. Something like that).

As of 2023 aks have become expensive, and cheapammo slowly depleting, many soldiers only carry up to 3 or 2 extra magazines. eventually a new rifle will take its place soon.

"It's not the most accurate weapon, nor the most elegant - but it simply doesn't have to be. It's good enough. It excels where fighters need it most. It's reliable: stoppages are rare, and any faults that do occur can probably be fixed with a hammer. It's simple to use: there's no need to pore over a manual. The AK is point and shoot. It's so simple a child could use it - and in some parts of the world, they often do."

Where did this design philosophy go for weapons? Simplicity and reliability.

not all kalashnikov are great
but soviets used better materials make it great
though its able to produce with normal steels, their performance are still lower than originals and less reliable

There is not any rifle that is more iconic than the AK. Used by good, by bad, by rebelions, by oppresors, by criminals, and by officers. Powerful, reliable, cheap and available anywhere. The perfect weapon.

"Of all the weapons in the vast soviet arsenal, nothing was more profitable than Avtomát Kalashnikova model of 1947. More commonly known as the AK-47, or Kalashnikov. It's the world's most popular assault rifle. A weapon all fighters love. An elegantly simple 9 pound amalgamation of forged steel and plywood. It doesn't break, jam, or overheat. It'll shoot whether it's covered in mud or filled with sand. It's so easy, even a child can use it; and they do. The Soviets put the gun on a coin. Mozambique put it on their flag. Since the end of the Cold War, the Kalashnikov has become the Russian people's greatest export. After that comes vodka, caviar, and suicidal novelists. One thing is for sure, no one was lining up to buy their cars."

AK-47 was designed by POW German Engineers in city of Tula, where they spend a decade working for free for Soviets. AK-47 was based on Schturmgever-44 rifle designed by legendary Schmeiser who was one of POWs. Kalashnikov was a tank driver and an idiot who was appointed by KGB to be the 'designer' although he never designed anything before or after in his entire life. I am Russian and was fed the same KGB bs all my life, but I know the truth now and so should you.

I think it's important as well to point out that the Kalashnikov was originally intended to fill a submachine gun role. The Soviets wanted a rifle, LMG, and SMG to fire the 7.62 round in order to simplify standardization. Degtyaryov's design filled the LMG role (RPD), Simonov's filled the rifle role (SKS), and Kalashnikov's originally filled the SMG role.

Once the Soviets realized it's reliability, however, they standardized the AK as their standard issue rifle to counter the American M14 and the FAL, both of which were made to help simplify standardization and combine the rifle, LMG and SMG roles into one weapon.
