There is a lot of nonsense and fiction in the Roots story. Firstly, the African slave trade was thriving well before white man ever hit the African coastline. African enslavement had been thriving within the Africa for centuries prior to the 18th century. In reality, Kunta Kinte would have been running from African slavers, not white men. Africans feared the African slavers far more than white slavers. Why? Because it was too expensive and dangerous for Europeans to venture into West Africa to capture slaves. It was more convenient for Europeans to purchase their slaves directly from African slavers along the coastal trade posts.
