It takes a certain set of life experiences to make this one’s favorite piece of music. Despite the intensity, Heifetz seemed always to keep the emotion contained. Chen’s performance I thought was equally ‘good’ but different; a bit lighter, a bit more contained, which was surprising. I wonder what would happen if Chen were to record a version without the Heifetz-like containment… with an organ. Bravo.

Most beautiful music ever

I cried the first time I heard this piece. It was the Heifetz recording with organ accompaniment. Beautiful. It's my 2nd favorite chaconne :)

I respect you very much as a player when you play other pieces and I know you are a great virtuoso but I think your interpretation is "too romantic" for this piece in the way of playing. It is a a baroque piece, isn't it ? I think it would sound better on a baroque violin and interpreted in the baroque tradition of playing without all those vibrati.

The big question here is "Did he write it or didn't he?" What we hear is far too modern and romantic to have been written by an Italian violinist from the baroque. It was rearranged by a German composer in the 1800s.and if you'll forgive the pun, it's been fiddled with ever since. So, did he write it or not? Who cares, it is sublime. Last Monday, Julie and David Coucheron gave a stunning performance of the Chaconne as part of our Casual Classics series here in Pickens county, Georgia. ( Not exactly the cultural center of the universe.)

Ray Chen has an excellent mastery of the violin! The phrasing and tone are impeccable. He makes the violin sings. Wow! This rendition of Vitali is breathtaking and moving!
