In this week’s edition of Behind the Headlines, we will be discussing the 80th Anniversary of the Mediterranean Island Malta receiving the George Cross for incredible bravery and gallantry for defying the Nazis. This despite being bombed three times the intensity of that of the Blitz on British cities.
The Island of Malta faced incredible Italian and German military aggression from 1940 to 1942 and the battle for Malta began on the 10th June 1940 when Italy entered the war on the side of the Germans. The next day the Italian air force bombed Malta.
Malta held the highest strategic value to the Germans as the Island was gateway to Africa and the Middle East and stood in the way of vital supply lines to German forces in North Africa. For the Nazis to win the African campaign would have threatened the Jews of British Mandate of Palestine with the final solution.
The Italian air force failure to conquer Malta resulted the German Luftwaffe to launch a massive bombing campaign on the Island by the New Year of 1941 resulted in more than 70 enemy aircraft destroying two hundred homes and the Blitz of Malta had begun.
The people of Malta changed the course of the Second World War by their refusal to surrender to Nazi aggression.
