Diplomatico is the nicest thing ever

Buchanans whiskey is particularly popular in mexico , Rum although has a long history with the spanish and the Caribbean ,due to all the sugarcane and molasses production. Whiskey got its start in the british isles , it never quite got a foothold in latin america because 1.spanish culture is far more prevalent 2. Rum was made locally , and more often than not cheaper than any imported whiskey that was or less intended for those with money , and guests to entertain. for example. a spainiard in mexico would surely have a decent scotch or bourbon for thier british or american business associate.. whiskey afterall is a gentlemens drink.

Definitely going with the de cana if i can afford it. Im currently halfway through my appleton estate as my first tasting to want to like rum more

You have not tried Rum until sipped a taste of Zacapa from Guatemala. It was so good when I was introduced to it, I stopped drinking whisky for like a year. Had one of it into my bottles since then.

The Flur de Cana bottle looks somewhat like a Crown Royal bottle.

Most bourbon drinkers I think may of tried Rum at one time years ago and it was probably a low end rum too ,so do yourself a favor and try a top self rum like any Four Square, Doorlys12, El Dorado 12 or 15 or Appleton 12

El Dorado 12 year is a good intro to sipping rums for whiskey drinkers. I've started going down the rabbit hole and it turns out I might be first and foremost an aged rum fan. That bottle of Diplomatico is infamous in rum circles - I believe it was their first rum, and they added the sugar and coloring to get by until their barrels aged, but it took off so fast that the demand has never tapered off. The heavy sugar smoothes out the rough edges that unaged rums have to make them more appealing neat.

Almost all rums in the French tradition have sugar added (called "dossage"), but it's typically a very small amount - the rum equivalent of the chef finishing off a soup with a sprinkle of salt.

I had the same experience. I always thought rum was a mixing spirit because we grew up with the clear white rum or spiced rum like Captain. But after dating someone from Puerto Rico, I learned to love great aged rums. Check out Ron del Barrillito

Not a rum drinker previously, but recently returned from a trip to Cuba where we drank Santiago de Cuba 11 year almost exclusively. I'm a rum drinker now! Upon returning home, I've compared it to Appleton Estate 12 year and Diplomatico. The Diplomatico comes close but falls short. The Appleton Estate not even close. If you get the chance to try Cuban rum, take it!

Sugar cane made rum is amazing

You gotta try the Opthimus by Oliver Rums, their rums are the best.

I've had all three and they're very decent rums but my fav rum/cigar pair is the cuban Havana Club Maestros Rum and a Montecristo N°4 Cigar. Good stuff!!

Howdy Boddy! Just subscribed and really pleased with the review) I'm a newbie into rum but already have managed to try some. Diplomatico turned out sickly sweet to my palate, so it ain't my cup of tea. As to Flor Decana 18, i've heard very controversial opinions about it, one of 'em is that this chap has very high alcohol burn both in taste and smell either. But i'm 100% sure that that of nearly 60% ABV will surely be my choice as winters are usually bitter in Russia. Today in Moscow we have minus 24 degree Celcius, so i best get warmed up))) Thanks again for the review. Cheers!

Try Ron Abuelo 7 year rum from Panama,a great sipper and paired with a A.Fuente Hemngway cigar is my favorite way to pair.

I just watched this because I got talked into one of those Camachos. I never smoked flavored cigars until now. Short story, you are absolutely right about the Four Square. I was able to get some 2010 at a local place for $85 and it is delicious. I found it to really open up with in a rocks glass with an ice cube in it. Lots of fabulous flavors in this stuff. I have respect for the sugared up rums that dont try to act as if its some cheap marketing thing. I think it's not really meant for the more sophisticated appreciators of rum, but just a fun, youthful, loosely joyous, and overall meant to be lighthearted. But it has to be a more or less humble bottle. It cant be some overpriced garbage that tries to hype itself up as the next frat party drink or some pirate adventure.

I like the diplomatico. I had other rums with way more sugar, which really werent that great, but the diplomatico isnt too sweet in my opinion. It is a good entry rum i would say. Its also not too expensive.

Appleton 12 year rare cask is good

Have you tried this rum Ron Zacapa Rum XO? It has won many awards. It’s from Guatemala. Or Brugal Leyenda from the Dominican Republic? where some of your finest cigars are hand rolled. Brugal Leyenda double aged in bourbon (6yrs) and Spanish red oak barrels (5yrs). Cheers 🍻

Are you sure about the Flor decana,and coloring?The bottle claims no added sugar,or artificial ingredients.Wouldn't that exclude food coloring'?
