There is no freedom of speech anywhere in the world. For example, censorship in the United States is called protection against disinformation. All countries of the world in the 21st century are essentially totalitarian dictatorships, but since the media is controlled by the authorities, no one talks or writes about it. They write and talk about countries of potential opponents. This is an information war.

When Mearsheimer blames NATO expansion, at best he is saying Ukraine's fate was to be forever like pre-NATO Finland. But Russia has been actively undermining Ukrainian jurisdiction for years, and revealed its intentions by the land it has seized and what it otherwise militarily attempted to do, i.e. establish a regime of its choice. Russia generally left Finland alone, because it doesn't see anything necessary there for itself. And somehow Sweeden and Finland in NATO is not an overriding concern of Russia's. Russia wants Ukraine for imperial purposes. Mearsheimer doesn't offer where the West should take a stand on national sovereignty. Given the commitments and investments made so far, the gradually increasing level of stress in Russia, and the fact that China is observing Western and Russian performance as it eyes an invasion of Taiwan, Ukraine may well be the timely place to demonstrate that national sovereignty does matter. NATO may yet stabilize Europe next to a chronically unstable Russia, or we are in for further extensions of the Russia empire. Russia needs to look at what it is risking in the long run being a neighbor of China. Putin has taken the worst possible approach to addressing that concern. A better future lay with the European community. He chose to expand a Russian dictatorship.
