From a pure looks standpoint this may be the perfect car. I don't really like Ferraris, especially before a certain year because you can't drive them 1000 miles without a full engine rebuild. Most Ferraris seem to spend their lives in climate controlled garages with their owners never driving them. Then there's the fact that Ferrari themselves throws a hissyfit if you dare to modify their fragile shitboxes. Damnit if they don't create some beautiful cars though. The 288/308/328 shape is just what a supercar should look like, with the 288 being the best example, looking like a 308 that spent the summer lifting weights. Let's also not forget how they sound. Perfect. They sound perfect. One of my first memories was riding in a Porsche 924 my dad bought so I went with Porches over Ferraris during the 80s even though there's very few 80s Porsches that will hang with any Ferrari of similar vintage, but at least you can drive your 911. However for pure spectacle it's difficult to beat a Ferrari. Even with air cooled 911s being stupid expensive seeing a 1987 911 Turbo you're like "Oh hey, it's a 912 Turbo, but when I saw a Testarossa my jaw dropped and I had to take pictures.

Before the F40 arrived and crushed all before it, the 288 GTO and 512BBi were the Ferraris I dreamed about owning back in the 80s. My penniless Teenage life back then would’ve been pretty miserable without these gems lighting up my naive little face as I went around with my head in the clouds 😂

I was always curious how similar or how different the 288 engine is compared to the 308 /328 Engine. Obviously other than being turbo. Block , internals? How similar are they ? Thanks

Nice car but just a piece of shit group b won nothing. Ferrari are redundant until they get back into road going cars winning races, rallying or anything other than crappy single manufacturer events, running scared. Even teslas are quicker

This one, the Testarossa, The Porsche 959 and the Jaguar XJ-220. Beautiful. I wish super cars would revisit 80's / 90's design. Simpler, less to go wrong, lighter (less materials). Just make them like that, no touchscreens, carbon fibre, and give them ABS + modern touches internally.

I remember as a teen in the late 80's and being interested in cars hearing about the F40 and the Porsche 959 being the fastest cars of their time but when I saw the 288GTO I was like wow now that's a car. Its one of the best looking Ferrari's I think and also love its purity but being so light and powerful. As Harry mentioned its roots being in group B I cant help but imagine it in the same company as one of my other favourite cars the Lancia 037 with the gearbox on view at the rear. Thanks Harry for sharing your experience of driving such an amazing piece of automotive engineering

- Do you want an original Zonda with almost delivery miles for £390,000?
- What do you mean? Is it burnt out or are you selling the wheels?
- No, it’s inflation-adjusted.

That’s what they cost back then. They were so rare that you could sell them for around the same price as they were brand new, which was around £220,000. That’s almost two or three fully-specked S-Class or CL Mercedes from the time, like the ones you could buy with higher miles for £1,500 each now! It makes me proud that I could drive almost half a Zonda in 2024.

It is crazy to me how fast modern cars are even when compared to the 288GTO, my 4.7 Maserati GranTurismo has very similar performance stats, now it is a GT car and nothing like the GTO, but 0-60, 1/4 mile and top speed are all pretty comparable and at 1.1% in the second hand market of the cost of a GTO now. It will never be even close to a GTO, but if you don't have $3M to spend, at least there exist options for mere mortals. Thanks Harry, great job as usual!

The GTO was my favourite Ferrari. It may still be (I haven't paid much attention lately, I would have to take a look at the recent ones and compare). It's the Ferrari that comes to mind when a person sayd "Ferrari".

When I was young, all the other kids liked the F40, the Testarossa... Later the Enzo. No one knew what I was talking about. This, this was the car.

Great video of my favorite car of the eighties. Everybody knows the F40. However, as Harry says, the 288 GTO is indeed a better car. Lighter, more pure, more drivable. An authentic Berlinetta for strong drivers, rather than a race car with plates.

Harry. nick in NZ here!. Love the high end but wondering when you may do a review on a Ferrari 308 GT4 as these are cracker drives, and you don't have to have a mate with a 3.5 million machine to test one. It is still a reachable Ferrari / or Dino- for an enthusiast and what a great thing that is for happy times behind the wheel and in life. Love to see you touch on and dig into a car like this that maybe one day I could buy. Cheers from New Zealand. Long long time subscriber:1)- from the start.

What an exciting topic! The Ferrari 288 GTO is such a legendary car with a rich history in the automotive world. It's always fascinating to hear about personal experiences and decisions, especially when it involves choosing between such iconic vehicles as the Ferrari 288 GTO and a Zonda. The journey of making such a choice must have been thrilling, considering both cars have their unique charm and performance capabilities. It's amazing how cars can not only be a mode of transport but also a passion and a significant part of one's life journey. The 1000km review aspect must add a lot of depth to the understanding of what these cars are really like on the road!

Controversial take maybe but I think these don’t sound great at low revs, but this sort of defines the phrase ‘to come on song’ as the revs rise it transforms into pure music… and the sharp increase in rate of acceleration of revs as it comes on boost sounds ace! Imagine what it sounds like in person with the gates shift “click” between gears too…. Oooft! And its look of 308 on steroids makes this a greatly proportioned object! Nice bit of Italian magic 🥰 great video Harry! 👏👏👏👏

Probably, like most car nuts, I have a short list of cars for my “Dream Garage” and the 288 GTO has always been on that list. In fact if you reduced that list to just five cars (as the wife would probably have me do) then it would still be on the list. What a stunning beautiful, wonderful piece of engineering, I’d even have this over an F40. Pretty please Santa, I’ve been a good boy this year…
