It is not the official story, but there is a lot of evidence that the real Kim Il Sung died (I think fighting the Japanese), and the man the Soviets installed as Kim Il Sung was a different person entirely; entirely a Soviet puppet, likely with no combat experience. I actually think this is the likely story.

Yeah I don't quite buy the theory of an original Kim Il Sung and an imposter. The difference in look is so minor. Face got a little bit more full, and he changed his hairstyle. That's pretty much it. There was a good 8 years when he fled to the USSR before returning. A persons appearance can change a lot more than his did over that amount of time. The evidence just isn't there and the information that the CIA called "evidence", really wasn't.
