The funny thing is, if they switch from Windows to Linux, many less servers will handle same jobs at same time. Less servers = less buildings.

It amazes me that no one seems to realize the real problem with data centers. In the past people used to be scared or worried about " Big Brother" collecting too much data and information on the citizens. At least the Government is supposed to answer to the citizens, not that they do anymore. One thing for sure is, these private corporations like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, etc., don't have to answer one bit to the citizens, they only have to answer to their investors, and their investors could care less about the citizens privacy and freedom. Most of their wealthy investors feel like they should own us and control us, and pathetically they pretty much do. Data and information stealing, taking, whatever you want to call it, has become a million and billion dollar industry. Whenever you download a "Free" App, Game, buy any kind of smart electronic product, even connected automobiles now, and sign any companies User and Data agreement, you're giving them permission to take and store anything they can find about you for their profit, and it's a lot more valuable than any crap they're offering you in return. Download our "free' App and we'll give you free French Fries, a soda. a sandwich, or five percent off of your next purchase. Meanwhile, they're making hundreds if not thousands of dollars over the long run selling your data and information. These corporations know more about you than you can remember about yourself and it's all stored in these data centers. No company, let alone individual should have that much power over the citizens! The other thing is, all of these corporations storing this huge amount of data has million and billion dollar contracts with pretty much every Government Intelligent Agency, as well as the Military. So they're working in tandem with "Big Brother" which they also pretty much own and control with their armies of Lobbyist.

Years ago Amazon had a third of ALL Internet traffic running through their servers, now it's probably a lot more. Talk about power and control. The miracles of "Free Market Capitalism" get rid of all rules and regulations protecting the citizens from business and finance and let them run wild. Well they have been for the last 40 years, and a few have been getting ignorantly and obscenely wealthy by taking everything they can from everyone else.

Not to mention what has already been said, these data centers gobble energy when we should be looking for ways to reduce our energy usage. If that's not bad enough all that energy is just so they can store more and more data on us.

In the past I worked at a few of these data centers when they were being built. Even then I felt like a traitor, but like so many others the money offered was too good to be passed up. Of course they would work you to death if you let them, six and seven days a week, ten, twelve, fourteen hours a day, after a short time you felt like you were living to work. Then when you realize you're building your own jail that really bothers you. Unfortunately most of the workers don't even bother to think about that, they just see dollars. Sadly, that's why so many Unions are supporting these things.

Interesting to see Microsoft's Columbia Data Center Campuses, having over 20 buildings and being 2 million square ft. Their being maintained room after room. The researches and development that we do are relies on the massive amount of servers within their facility. Containing over 19,000 battery cells and over 140 electrical generators with in the campuses, more than enough to power up to 3000 houses. Tens of thousands of diesel to fuel the generators, soon to be replaced by new generators that runs on hydrogen power or new advanced fuel cells.
