Book vs. Movie: Anne of Green Gables in Film & TV (1934, 1985, 2016, 2017)

Honestly if it wasn't for anne of green gables 1985 version, i wouldn't have bothered watching anne with an e, that film was life changing. Megan and the guy who played gilbert, all the actors in those films were top notch.

the difference between Ann with and E and the other adaptions is that most were films. I really liked ann with an e because of the continued storyline we saw more development

but i prefer Megan Follows and guy who played gilbert

Anne with an E started off decent, then it devolved into a parody of the stories. Too many attempts at modern themes in the show. By the end of the second season it deviated so far away from the source material that it was barely Anne of Green Gables anymore. It was canceled because it lost old fans and was no longer the story of Anne Shirley. It became a vessel for political showboating.

1985 was the best adaption of this lot. It may never get a better adaption than 1985. Not with how scripts are handled today.

Anne with an E is the best you can find the real Anne on it. More lively and the Gilbert character which everyone wants. Moreover, this Matthew is the best.

I saw the 1985 version & liked it & I didn't know they made a modern version of Anne for 2016 & 2017 Megan Follows really embodied Anne I also wasn't aware Anne was done in 1934.

The 1985 Anne of Green gable is true to the book, the few changes are still in the same spirit as the book.
Anne of Green gables is a feel-good-book, Anne with an e is a feel-bad-TV-series. Not only is it not true to the book it is the opposite of the book, it desecrate it.😡

I like the 1934 and 1985 versions

I liked Anne With An E because it managed to successfully write a darker version of the story that wasn’t inherently strange or promiscuous. It stayed true to the core themes of its original source material, and managed to relate commentary on issues that definitely would’ve surrounded that time period (the commentary on women’s rights was particularly excellent). Not to mention, the acting from Amybeth McNulty, Geraldine James, R.H. Thomson, and all the others is excellent and believable—especially McNulty’s, she brings an undeniably-youthful essence to Anne. All in all, Anne With An E is great!

I have vague memories of the 1970s BBC TV show. That was my favourite back then (the 30s movie deviated too much for me to like it), but then the 80s CBC version blew the others out of the water! I tried watching the two new versions. But I didn't like the acting in the one with Martin Sheen, and the Anne With an E show was WAY too dark, and cruel. I didn't stay with it, but knowing how much the 2nd season deviated from the book, I know I would hate it

Watching all 3 versions of "How dare you?!" during the carrots scene really highlights just what a powerhouse actress Megan Follows is. Both of the others sound somewhat stilted. Megan shakes with rage and it sounds 100% real.

Season 1 of Anne with an E was a masterpiece of sorts. However, seasons 2 and 3 went off the rails. I was so sad that the ending with the native family was left open. That poor girl being left at that school! :(

Not one screen adaptation of the Anne books will ever hold a candle to Sullivan’s 1985 miniseries with Megan Follows and the rest of that outstanding cast. This is a fact.

I grew with Anne of Green Gables, 1985 and watched it on 16mm at the time. Its always the definitive version because it was more of a hard love story, with nice story archs, film score and its something I have rewatched over time. But Anne with an E would be a close second. I cant see myself rewatching any season. It was interesting to watch but definately not larger than life.

I've only seen the Netflix version. I was honestly quite surprised by how much I enjoyed. From all the information in this video, I'm sure the Netflix version would be my favourite. If you lot liked the Netflix version, there's a petition for a fourth season.

Since they cancelled the Netflix one can someone tell me what happens to Anne and Gilbert? Or Ka'wet and Diana? Please I can't possibly read all of the book series I'm too anxious lol

1934 version is beautiful

My favorite adaptation is "Akage no Anne" (1979). With the same staff that would later create Sudio Ghibli.

I watched them all. But I prefer the one starring Meghan Follows. Her acting there was phenomenal. Plus, as the series goes on, she becomes absolutely stunning and brilliant. I was seriously smitted, too. Also, even if filmed so long ago, the series is greatly executed and the quality of the picture is optimal.

I'm young but I grew up with the 1985 film series and the books! The earliest film is actually a silent one from 1919, just 11 years after the first book Lucy Maud Montgomery wrote. There are many many films, series and books including Road to Avonlea series. I hope to visit Prince Edward Island to see where the author grew up and the Lake of Shining Waters too.

You should put Anne of Green Gables anime.

The only one that counts to so many is the 1985/1986 version!! Its so true to Anne's essence and nature , and so superbly acted. You really feel you're in a safe and cosy world.

The Netflix series is the worst Anne of green gables adaption ever, I recommend watching 1985 version or 2016 version, however there's like 6 or 5 more adaptations

I think the 1985 version interpreted the life of Anne in Green gables with more light and less problematic which is good but Anne with an E was outstanding! It tackled all situation that we face such as racism, lgbt, feminism, sexual harassment, lgbt, and more. The performance of the cast was flawless. The show itself was loved by so many including me. It's the definition of a masterpiece. It's far from the books but it's the most realistic of all adaptations. Amybeth did a wonderful job

why didn't they include the two following movies of the 1985, The Sequel (1987) and The Continuing Story (2000)

I love the book but… idk there is a part of me that feels that none of the Anne’s have the spark that Anne from the book had. She to me just has this bigger than life personality that none of the actress can match.

At first I thought that before I watched the 1985 version, I came to believe it was gonna suck and be boring, amazingly it really was a good movie even the sequel, sadly they didn't continue these movies with the same actress afterwards.

My fave boook. I’ve read this when I was the age of Anne in the books so it’s very special to me. I didn’t want to watch any adaptation because I didn’t want to ruin the idea of Anne in my head. She was a big inspiration to me. But lately I tried to watch Netflix’s show and at first, I thought it was bad because it was too dark. I realized it would be too dark for my 12 year old self. But now as a 22 year old, I think the portrayal is more realistic. It feels like it’s because I also grew up. My 12 year old self would never understand the Netflix version

Only 1985 version for me. I don't watch netflix series because they screw all classics and always focusing on political and social controversy. Also the new actors looks too childlish for me. Version with Megan Follows wil always remain me my own childhood.

My favourite is the book of course but I love Anne with an E and the 1985 version.

Anne with a E maybe on its own a good show but Anne of green gables is something so special an majestic about it. The 2nd version by far is my favorite. It’s extremely Nostalgic for me…. So to see a dark version really puts me off because I know the other. Just my opinion

Watched this because I’m trying to decide whether I should watch Anne with an E. I’ve only seen the 1985 one and it’s one of my favorite movies so I’m scared lol
