Rather than using a cinema camera package, Vee decided to shoot this episode with the Sony A7Siii with Sony/Zeiss Plantar lenses. While not the same as her original short, they're both affortable and popular setups at their respective times of filmming!

lmao, the audio is bad and the acting is worse though. Lighting is great yes but it just doesn't feel natural now. The set looks expensive and unrealistic. Feels like an ad. I guess the take away here is there is such a thing as having too little production and over producing things.

question, I notice there's a lot of scrims/nets used to stop down the lights in most videos. Is this absolutely necessary for LED COBs and Panels that have a dimming function?

The remake placed too much emphasis on technical realization than the original. I like the energy, movement and use of space in the original. But the cinematography of the newer version is cool. I may wish to dial down a little on the backlight: a little obstructive.

Subtlety is important. The new film looks really commercial-ish. Really took the vibe away

both have different strengths, first one seems more real. Second one has nice commercial look to it, but more manufactured feel --which is mostly coming from the placement of the couch being soooo in the middle of the room. I just don't know any family that would sit there or put their couch so in the middle; the 2nd parents look uncomfortable on the couch. Lighting on the little girl in the 2nd one is really good and the boy, I would just change the backlight from the windows peaking in and out behind his head it is very distracting from their convo.

I think it was a bit too controled and with less energy than the old short film you originally maid...also when the kids sit at the table...the boy has a bit WAY TOO MUCH Light spill on his face..hardly can see his face which is kinda distracting and when you cut to the girl responding to him her face is lit well and looks great...its just very noticable when u cut to the boy and his face is like so differently lit compares to the girl hers is nice and settle and his face is blown out with over spill...you can have all the gear in the world if you are not seeing those mistakes as a director is pointless. Other then what i mentioned it was ok but i dont think i could watch it a 2nd time... 👍

Thank you as always for your video but I have to say that I found the 600D as backlight kinda weak. The bloom (glow) is very distracting watching the kid and it's also not separating him as much as it could have been. A 60x would have been (imho) a better choice instead of the 600D alone.

Girl's ADR is bad. Pulls me right out. You using people of color in the remake also makes me very skittish. Then again maybe you are on the woke train judging by your hair so you won't mind audiences associating your work with all the trash Hollywood is pumping out these days.

Where can I watch the first one to fully compare? From just the snippets, the first one feels a lot more expressive especially with staging.

The movement around each other, the pointing to go get a job, the eye lead from the girl before the swish pan, the 2 shot close ups of each parent with a child making it more personal, the empty fridge showing us that they had no groceries vs just popping a pop tart…all better stuff in the original I say.

Idk, a lot of these videos are SAYING 'all you need is talent and intentionality' but you then bring in a BUNCH of other variables like gaffers, TONS of equipment, a PAID set that you had to rent out instead of just "someones house", and so on. You are BUYING character and quality...you aren't actually showing what someone at your starting level can produce if they just had more "talent"....which is just my general issue with the concept of success but end of the day, the video is more just a flex than it is instructive. "If you have the money for a multiple lighting setup with the gaffing equipment to set it up + the money for a set that imbues more charm into the frame, and so on.

Like, you are complaining about white walls...most houses in the US are just white walls because people are poor...the reason parents fight and get divorces is MOSTLY money. End of the day, I kind of agree with some comments here that the "grit" of the first one actually protrayed something more honest about the scene.

Thanks, Great job on the video. Also, like 99% of online lighting tutorials, you show how to light a person standing or sitting still. In many serranoes in video the person and or camera is moving. Please do a video on lighting for movement.

I'd agree the newer one definitely has higher production value but thats because you added value with the amount of money spent on lights, crew etc I think the thing that threw me off most about the new one is the couch being so unnaturally so far away from the wall in the middle of the room - looked so staged and like a set where no house has this couch in the middle of the room. On contrary, loved the conversation piece at the table. The little girls acting was great.

My only point I like on the original over the remake is that the kids standing when there arguing feels more dynamic! Apart from that Ultimately a massive improvement. My only question is what if your back catalogue of films do you recommend I watch first? Iv only discovered this channel today
