No. They didn't. They built a space weapons platform and disguised it with the stolen space shuttle diagrams and left it to rot because their entire system was a failure not just their fake space shuttle.

The Proof in the pudding is that the USSR was doomed to fail because of Communism. It space program was doomed also because of lack of funding. The only reason the Russians have a working system is Because when Obama killed the shuttle program we financed the Russian space agency. The US Shuttle's we both launched by computer and could be landed by computer. It had 5 computer systems onboard to operate and land remotely if wanted, but our astronauts had the choice to fly computer or manual control. Also the US Shuttles were designed for 100 flights each. Again, Obama cut the funding and turned NASA into a PR Group to improve relationships with Muslims. Also Obama cut the funding for the Artemis Program. Trump got the Artemis Program back on schedule. The Biden cut/slashed some of the Artemis Budget. We were already supposed to be back on the moon already.

Espionage....there was a spy inside NASA. The Russians were stealing the plans for the it space shuttle from the US. The US knew it and provided bogus plans, bogus wiring, bogus engine spec and bogus everything. The Russian space shuttle never was launched.

No! The Soviets never designed a space shuttle. They stole the plans for the US shuttle. but did not obtain the specs for the life support and telemetry systems. When they attempted to show it to their own Cosmonauts, they declared it a "Deathtrap" and refused to fly it at any price. It's only mission was photo-op, and even that didn't get very far.

How sad we stop developing capsules flying on rockets when the space shuttle caused more deaths than any capsules we or the russians ever produced.

Seriously the space shuttle waswaaaay over doing it. It was expensive, costly with lives lost, costly with tax dollars and we still used "disposable rockets" for the space shuttle: how else would it get to space? It didn't fly up on its own. It cruised down from space.

It required being perched on/strapped to a G i G a N t i C fuel tank that held two powerful boosters , all of which were disposed of as soon as orbit was being achiwved.

We never stopped using disposable rockets hun.

It wouldn't be til Elon Tusk that we would start taking reusable rockets seriously and even then, if he keeps stealing the spotlight from the air force with his rocket program he's not gonna be long for this world.
The US military likes it's contracts and likes being give arbitrary access to space and space faring equipment.

Anyways, the shuttle was too expensive and ultimately the 80s were a time of complete excess and expendable /disposable income . We were able to afford all the thigh masters, metallic colored soandex thong workout leotards and pastel colored leg warmers and cocaine we could ever want.

So I can see the why for the space shuttle but I'm disapoint as they coulda used all that bread for somehing else we can go to space with. Better more powerful and safer rockets.

Something that functions and delivers a positive result is always better than something that might appear better, but doesn't produce any positive result.

It's an interesting piece of history, especially with all of the espionage going on during the cold war. Obviously the Buran was the blatant result of spying on the US. And the changes they made would have been interesting if they were ever able to get the program functional. Unfortunately it was just an exercise in successful spy craft and wasting untold amounts of money.

Let's be real. The Russians "always" make something that was "the best" and "amazing" and "the biggest" ... oddly enoough, they make one, two, three ... (12) prototypes, that everyone claims how awesome they are. Every Russian invention was awesome on paper, where it stayed because of f-ed up system they had/have and thus they could not put it into full fruition. But the things they did make in large quantities mostly proved to be rudimentary, full of mistakes, lacking or straight unable to compete.
USA makes awesome stuff in large quantities that make them operationally (in a well-thought-out system) even more awesome.
Russia (USSR) makes "awesome" stuff on paper, usually in one sample, largely untested so no one can (with a fact) attest to how half-assed it was, but still everyone in a romantic tone and with tragic sympathy claims how awesome it would be if it would see production ... and there it is, where we are - at unproven products and claims.
