I’m very happy to have found this channel. I think there is too much emphasis today on technique and athleticism. Artistry is diminished in favour of hyper extensions etc which to my eyes are not always attractive. The partnership of Fonteyn and Nureyev was a “partnership made in heaven” to quote the English critic Mary Clarke. Certainly, the stars were aligned in that Nureyev came to the West at just the right time. Are there better technical dancers today? Of course, there were in his own day. Didn’t he say, “if you think I’m good, you should see Soloviev.” But he was the first, and for me the last. I’ve never seen a dancer like him and I doubt I ever will.

A coupling made in heaven. They complement each other so well, and you believe the story they are telling. Many of today's dancers put technique over performance, which should include emotion without histrionics and hyper extensions, involving the slowing down of tempo to produce them. There is an intangible about Fonteyn and Nureyev. Everything they do seems so right, almost like the standard. Thank goodness for these recordings.

A beautiful production in terms of scenery and expression, but how much the dancers' physical abilities have evolved since then. And Nureyev's choreography lacks the fire of the original version, especially in the dance of the black swan
