Well then.... Genuinely saying this for once, I wish I could like this more than once. Just superlike it or something.

Very thought provoking and just what I needed to lubricate those gears in my head and get them turning. Been struggling with getting back into reading for my own enjoyment after school drained all the fun out of reading for me for decades. (I used to love reading so much as a child but just didn't have the right approach.) Caught in a sticky tangly web of mindless doom scrolling is what my brain decided to do at that point. So I've been clawing my way out the last couple years.

But this... You've put into words a concept I almost knew but never completely understood.

Thank you.

I have a LOT of spare time, so for me to sink hours and hours into reading -- that is why I can read so many books in a year. If you're reading a book properly, you won't be able to read hundreds of books a year. Whenever I feel self conscious about the small amount of books I've read in the year, I always ask myself this -- what is the point of cramming so many books just to "be smarter" if I won't remember most of what happened anyway?

Btw, you have a great voice and an amazing way of speaking. When you repeat the sentences with slight variation it really draws in my attention; I have a learning disability and one of my favourite teachers used to speak just like that which helped me so much. Thank you for this video ❤️

I’ve been slowing down my reading lately. Because I want to be able to understand everything that the writer is conveying. Especially since I’ve started reading some self help books, I allow life to take place and then try and implement the concepts that are being spoken on. I never quite understood why people like to rush through things. We can’t rush through life. Why would we rush through books?

I agree with a lot of what you said but you can also derive a lot of meaning from a "genre fiction novel" , you can also analyse it. It can also give you thoughts that you never had before, they are not just only for entertainment.

In regards to the quantity vs quality thing about the amount of books you read, in 2020 i read less books than in 2021 but i can't recall most of the books i read that year. I feel like I really savored the books i read in 2020 and they stuck with me unlike the next year where i read a lot just for the sake of reading more

The worst of the generalist reader is like the man who enjoys the feeling of wind on his face, but not necessarily the boredom changing his oil. On the other hand, the man who's obsessed about the sensation of oil, and not seeing his oil changing in thinking through arguments in a book is meant for the joy of being a free man who uses the car of his mind well, might get obsessed and stuck on an idea where getting more mileage will actually give him the perspective he needs but doesn't know he would get by coming back later.

I see plodding through books steadily as the man who chooses to work out regularly. He can build off the good foundation he's established, and go to more specialized programs after he's spent some months getting used to the self-denial and sacrifice of freedom that come from sacrificing your schedule and rewiring how you see the opportunity cost involved in choosing to spend time reading instead of typing YT comments...for instance...

runs away to read

We have so many people that are superficial and lack reading comprehension skills. Many can't follow SOPs.
Or they think they know, but when it's time to apply the knowledge to solve problems, they just can't do it correctly or efficiently.

Reading is important - no matter what you read.

But why do you need to read genre fiction so fast? I've tried reading it quick and I can't get immersed, but the second I slowed down I was able to create attachments to characters and visualize environments so much better, which made those sad or thrilling moments so much more impactful and immersive.

You just ramble on and on. Your main point is merely read more, read more carefully, more widely. Be honest, after listening to you for about 10 minutes, I find yourself just repeating the points again and again.

Mortimer J. Adler wrote quite a bit of stuff. His revised version of How To Read a Book is a work that should also be read slowly, in my opinion.

While I do agree that it should make a difference to the person, and I think its important to give new knowledge (or perhaps old and only as of yet undiscovered perhaps ?) a chance, I also believe that you shouldnt APPLY every single thing you read to yourself "willy-nilly". If that was the case, how would it be when people read "Mein Kampf" ?? And intellectual people have also done bad things, if I remember correctly, wasnt Shoko Asaharas right hand man, a well educated man with a high IQ ? (thats a cult leader and a terrorist that murdered a lot of people). Yet.....well yknow. The lessons you learn from a book shouldnt always necessarelly be what the authour intended. Thank God! Im still going to be reading those books upsetting to everybody, though, because I think its important. FOR DIFFERENT REASONS. Love your channel, discovered it not long ago!

I'm not a native english speaker, so i don't know if i got right what the literary fiction kind of book is. Is it the kind of book that exposes the psyche of some of its characters? like Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment?

my struggle with reading non fiction, which is the main type i read (my physical library of five 4 foot long shelves is 90% non fiction) is i take forever to read them because i want to take notes of basically everything in those books. every piece of information is so valuable to me that it has really just become a chore and i stopped picking my books up because i knew i would feel like i had to open up a notebook as well. so sad. great video i love it and made me feel less bad about reading those books slowly. think ill pop one open tonight

I have studied an excerpt of an essay by Francis Bacon called "Of Studies". It says the same idea. Here is a part of it:

"Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed and digested; that is, some books are to be read only in parts; others to be read, but not curiously; and some few to be read wholly, and with diligence and attention. Some books also may be read by deputy, and extracts made of them by others; but that would be only in the less important arguments, and the meaner sort of books, else distilled books are like common distilled waters, flashy things."

Arrasou!
