I actually remember reading about the Rumpelstilskin Story when I was in kindergarten. When I saw Shrek Forever After, I didn't realise the villain was actually based on the character I was taught about in kindergarten.

The one in the book I read portrayed him as a mysterious short man who was willing to do all the work for the Princess who the Kingdom expected so much from. Each workload getting progressively bigger until Rumpel promised he'll do the last batch which was the biggest of them all, but as the Princess was having a Baby, Rumpel wanted the Baby in return UNLESS the Princess could guess his name. One day, a Noble came to see the King and reported that he saw a man dancing around a fire, cackling and chanting that he will take the Princess' baby not unless they hear the name "Rumpelstiltskin". When the day came for Rumpel and the Princess to say goodbye, Rumpel gave the Princess the opportunity to guess his name, all of them were wrong and when he was about to take the baby, the Princess' mind struck and she took one last guess and guessed Rumpelstiltskin. Rumpel was filled with glee and excitement for the clever Princess that he ended up jumping out of the window and landing into the castle moat, drowning in the process. The End.
