Bloodborne: The Greatest Soulsborne Ever Made ( Critique 2022 )

I say this with respect, Bloodborne is the most overrated game ever made, it's still a good game but nowhere near a masterpiece, gave it a chance multiple times but couldn't figure out why a lotta people consider it a classic, i prefer demon's souls, DS trilogy, Sekiro & Elden Ring over this by a mile . It's still shocking to me how people are still talking about it today.
Anyway, just wanted to share my humble opinion, good video as always .

slight correction about the lore when you were talking about ludwig:

in the cutscene after vicar amelia, willem is talking to laurence, not ludwig. laurence founded the healing church, and ludwig was the leader of the church hunters. to my knowledge, he was basically the inventor of trick weapons and the like. he was also said to have killed more beasts than any other hunter. this caused him to be consumed by the thirst for blood and become the beast that you see in the dlc.
his holy moonlight sword is, im pretty sure at least, a product of a great one, and sort of has a cosmic conscience of it's own. it grants its own power to its wielder, if it feels the wielder deserves it. this is why ludwig speaks to it like it's an actual entity in the phase transition, because to him, it is. in his realisation that he still has his guiding moonlight, he regains a bit of his humanity, and stands one last time to fight what might be the final beast he will ever fight, the player. that's why his attacks in phase 2 become so much more coordinated and trained. he remembers his humanity, and everything he did to preserve it, and attempts to do it one last time.

It deserves a proper PC port and Sony does not seem interested at all in allowing it.

I dont wanna be the "lore" police or anything BUT the founder of the healing church isn't Ludwig. Ludwig was the first healing church hunter who was guided by the light of the moonlight sword. How he attained the sword is unknown. The real founder of the healing church is Laurence the first Vicar. He used to be a scholar who was training under master William to ascend into a great one. However Laurence believed the way to ascend was in the old blood while Willam believed it was through insight and having multiple eyes inside of your head for you can see what humans should never be able to comprehend. Due to this disagreement (which we see in the fear the old blood cutscene) Laurence went off to establish the very church that lead to this plague of beasts to begin with and was more than likely the one who rather orcustrated or at least agreed to the killing of Koz, the experiments on the fishing Hamlet, and even the one who said to build the research hall. Other than the great ones themselves. Every single atrocious deed that happened in Bloodborne was his doing. Condeming the original wave of hunters trained by German to hunt for all eternity and even have Ludwig join them as a mindless beast in the corpes pile of his fellow hunters who even in his dying breath just wants to believe they did the right thing even when tempted by the blood and the greed of ascention. Ludwig simply did what he thought was right and is basically a failed hero. Other than German all of the original hunters are in the hunters knightmare. When it comes to Ludwig and his church hunters he's the only church hunter we see in the knightmare other than the bodies in the corpse pile and all around the hunters knightmare area. Its unclear but we assume the orginal wave of hunters were condemes to the hunters knightmare far after the actual killing of Kos happened since Maria killed herself before she was put in the knightmare by Koz and German made the doll of her shortly after and between the span of killing Koz and the hunters nightmare being created thats when German became the host of the hunters dream by the moon presence and Laurence Estaished the church hunters not long after the atrocities of the fishing hamlet. Since Ludwig is in the same nightmare however it could be German was an exception to the knightmare of Koz and he along with hunters like you that came after they killed Koz were safe while every hunter and Church hunter that (from what we know) didn't have access to the hunters dream due to German not being its host yet were the ones who were sent to that knightmare. Which would mean rather than German's hunters being older. Ludwig's and Germans hunters were established around the same time. Like 2 different branches of the church. One branch simlly slayed beasts while the other was responsible for the killing of koz since even im the item description for ludwigs weapons it says the church weapons compared to the beast hunting weapons were made to fight bigger beasts if not something beyond which is implied to be the great ones. This would make sense since the 3rd branch aka the executioners were responsible for the destruction of Cainhurst. There is a sort of 4th branch which ar ethe powder keg hunters as well but they are more so a part of the beast hunters then their own branch. Same goes for the hunter of hunters like Eileen the crow and the bloody crow of Cainhurst. This took forever to type and i know no one will read but hey i was bored. Sorry for the miss types if someone does read this lol.

My main complaint with Bloodborne is there is no way to respec. Every other Action RPG I've played had a mechanic that let you respec multiple times per playthrough, I like how Wo Long let's you save up to 5 builds/loadouts per character and you can switch between them very easily. Other than that I have the same complaints as you. Bloodborne is a masterpiece of a game and quite possibly Fromsoft's Magnum Opus. Elden Ring is right up there, but man the setting, style, lore and general aesthetic of Bloodborne is amazing. A gothic steampunk cosmic horror noir, so fricken cool.

It still baffles me how people say that 30fps isnt optimal, when if you didnt know any better, you wouldnt be able to tell. Like most, normal, people if you sat them down and showed them two clips of gameplay (not beside each other, but one after another), one being 30 and the other being 60 or higher, most of them wouldnt be able to tell a difference.

ahhh bloodborne fanboys and their delusions of grandeur. its a stereotype at this point to hear bb fanboys say its the greatest thing ever made in the universe XD nah man, bb is nowhere near the best soulsborne game, i would say it ranks about 4th in the series, behind ER, sekiro, ds1 and 3. it does have the most delusional fanbase by far though and thats saying something considering how toxic the older fanbases of fromsoft can get.

also other than bloodvials and annoying warping, theres barely any actual critique in this video, you shouldve talked about the problems of this game, allow me to do that for you:

its R1 spammy and borderline mindless combat, which can be great when it works like in boss fights, but half the game's enemies can be just walked up to R1ed to death without retaliation, ds3 fixed that with countless high poise enemies, even the fodder enemies can smack you back if you spam, but theres just way too many enemies in bb that dont have poise or a means to attack you back if youre spamming R1. its the game with the least strategy between all the games.

more than half the trick weapons and their transformation attacks are nowhere near as good as the other half(which is why most ppls 1st playthrough had them just spamming R1 for 40 hours till end credits, never experimenting with R1+L1 combos) its recycled and samey atmosphere is the one that stung the most, while the atmosphere itself is great, im all for lovecraft stuff, in fact i read literally all of his works, unlike most bb fanboys, minus his poems though, the thing is theres laughably more to lovecrafts masterfully crafted environments that what bb has to offer, too much of the main game looks and feels the same and borderline recycled, its pretty much 40 hours of grey corridors, grey castles and spires, grey coffins and grave stones and a singular forest, thats also grey XD, the colorscheme of this game is far less creative then the others and took the least effort to make.

one of the reasons why elden souls' environments are far better designed and more artistic is the batshit creativity and variety in them. fromsoft had so many opportunities to create varied environments straight from lovecrafts works like farmlands and quant british brick villages and modern-ish cottages, i just wish there were more environments like cainhurst and hamlet. bb fanboys tend to talk about thematic consistency, but thats just a lazy excuse for its lack of creativity in environments.

last but not least, almost every boss after vicar, barring the G man and logarius, is mediocrely annoying(shadows, amygdala) to just bad (rom, one reborn) to downright badly designed trash (micolash *shudders in digust**), overall its a great game, but frankly i would call it the jack of all trades of fromsoft, its great at everything but not masterful at anything, ds1, sekiro and ER are where fromsoft fired all cylinders.

This game is an experience. One of those rare things in life that elevates your appreciation of the amazing things humans can create. I just wish I could play it for the first time again

I gave Bloodbourne a hard pass, not interested in dark souls with guns, I did however love all the souls games and elden ring.

I dont care about lore, story or stuff like that, i dint even know what lovecraft is. When i play a game im all about 2 things, gameplay and atmosphere. Bloodborne is one of my favorite game of all time, im not a fan of blood gems and leveling up weapons i wish it was more like sekiro all about skill so i can use whatever weapon i wsnt but i still love it

I started with Elden Ring and loved it, then i played Dark Souls it was as good as Elden Ring and Sekiro I loved more. For me Bloodborne is better than Dark Souls but i prefer Sekiro. That being said Bloodborne is still one of the best games I've ever played.

Too many boss run backs and farming for health items holds this game back from being great. They fixed the formula in later souls games

The fact that this game gets called the best when it has the worst boss line up in the franchise is hilarious. So many bad bosses. Its crazy. I will never understand people that put this above Ds3 and obviously Sekiro is 1000 times better.

Elden Ring was my first. But Bloodborne has me. Such an amazing game. I can't stop playing it. I love the chalices too. The lore, the bosses, the scenery, just everything lol. I absolutely hope they announce doing a part 2 after the Elden Ring DLC. Bloodborne is a masterpiece.

While I think ER is Fromsofts magnum opus that perfected the genre. Please don't take my word for it either. Look at sales. I was still pulled into Bloodbornes world, and it's rpg pieces just the same. I also love the Lovecraftian Cthulhu/aliens setting. The art team knocked out the old-world European setting. Sony needs to remaster it for PS5 and release it to PC so more get to play it. I think Bloodbornes only missteps were actually done on purpose, and they don't bother me as much. I just laugh and smile at the thought of the masochistic Japanese that made it.
It's all meant to mess with you as much as it can. Why did they include a sweet gemstone that raises your stats high only to have that same gem stone drain your health constantly as well once you seat it? 🤣 That's messed up man. It's also not even worth that much to sale.

«Nightmare slain» is the message you recieve when a true Great One dies. It only happens after killing Mergo, Moon Presence and Orphan. And yes, you kill Mergo. Fromsoft just couldn’t show on screen that the player killed a giggling defenseless.

When the Hunter becomes a great one, it is because the Hunter evolved. Many signs point to Oedon being the Moon Presence.

Amygdalae aren’t full great ones, more akin to demigods. They themselves are more akin to messengers of the great ones than creatures in their own right. The spiders in Mensis have no connections to them and are likely just there as a remnant of Mergo’s memory of Pthumeru as the regular spiders are common in the dungeons.

Oedon’s name is inspired by Odin, but pronounced more like «Uh-den» as «oe» is the spelling anglophones use for the letter ø/ö.

Bosses in the past 15-20 years have mostly been just giant sponges you try to take down as fast as possible and I loved it. The souls series humbled me. Then came this beautiful piece of art, that combines the 2 styles into this beautiful dance of calculated, precise aggression that just hasn’t been matched since, all on top of a beautiful art style and deep lore that is probably the best Eldritch horror since Lovecraft himself. 7/10 too much water

Bloodborne is meant to represent the nightmarish experience of Victorian-era medical research. It's a metaphor for body dissection and addiction for example. William Ernest Henley and the Robert Lewis Stephenson inspired this game not Lovecraft

But Rom doesn't summon the spiders, he/she is vacuous, without knowledge, the spiders are summoned by a higher power to protect Rom. Whereas the Living Failures are CLEARLY SUMMONING THE ASTEROIDS COLLECTIVELY.

My favorite souls like game, this and dark souls 3. Great games.

I do not get it, I’m playing it feels like any other souls games. I feel like only ppl who like gothic shit or this is there first souls gamr think this is the best shit ever . First of 30fps in 2024 is a nightmare … but I guess I get used to it…Everything looks the same. Bosses look the same and so far are super boring and unremeberable. I’m gonna be honest I don’t even know what I’m fighting half the time the frames make it so blurry the bosses just look like blurry blobs of fury😂. All Levels looks the same. Fire is like the only buff in this game….boring …And it’s real easy compared to other souls game . I’m one trying every boss so far . Never know where to go. Play styles are very restricted, feels like playing Elden ring but ur only allowed it use like 2 builds. Combat is fun I like the gun party tho . Every souls game is amazing but I feel like the formula has been done better. It might be my least favorite besides ds2 still have to replay the other games to be sure
