I was a beginner for 36years and Im comfortable to say I'm mid intermediate at 38yo. 2 years of solid work on grade 2 and grade 3. Polishing grade 4 exam in june 2024 and now working on grade 5 pieces alongside theory.

I am a synthesizer enthusiast, playing Baroque and Renaissance music that I have learned visually by playing MIDI files with an app called MIDI Voyager free and on my PC I use Piano From Above. I can't read sheet music, so I'm not even at the beginner level. I would have liked to have had the opportunity to learn in my childhood. If you have the opportunity to learn from a teacher, it would be recommended. Good video.

Wont lie to you.. I never tried scales. I played violin for 4 years before I got a keyboard I know the notes of all the scales. I learned how to play a couple hundred songs that I like and by then I was good enough to play at church, then at church I started to move closer to the advanced level. I think I’m pretty good but I hesitate to call myself an “advanced” pianist

Hi lovely Lisa. I was with you, quite happily scoring myself as intermediate until you got to Repertoire when all the wheels fell off. I simply cannot learn pieces. I do it bar by bar, slowly at first, hands separately then hands together and "bank" the first 4 bars, say. Then I move onto the next 4 bars, bank them and try and play all 8 as a phrase or couple of phrases only to find I can no longer play the first 4 bars reliably. What's wrong with me? I can't spend my whole life filling my folder with 4 bar pieces .🤔

I used to be a beginner keyboard player. Then I only practiced the guitar for the next several years, trying to learn music theory, chord formations, and "master" rhe craft of composing, ultimately reaching close to an advanced level with it. When I went back to keyboard playing, I found myself in the intermediate category of it more or less, and I suspect my fingerstyle background helps.

I've since been putting in the hours to get better with my humble ol keyboard. The fact that the left hand is the chord hand on the guitar surely helps with some amount of hand independence on the keyboard, but I still have one hand that is definitely quicker than the other.

I realise that edges will flrever have roigh bits so witbout being discouraged, I march ahead.

Thanks for that. Sometimes I feel like an intermediate playing few licks and riffs, chord subs, passing chords, little tritones, etc. I know I'm still a late beginner and not yet reach intermediate yet for 4 years now. Still being patient with self. Practice is key.

I’ve been playing piano with no formal training for years and although I’m no expert, I was hoping to check off more than 2 boxes at the intermediate level. Truth hurts, but the video makes you face the music. I have no desire or need to become an expert, but if I can check off half or more of the intermediate boxes I would be satisfied with my ability and what I could do. I can fool my non-piano playing friends that I know piano, but those who know piano know that I really don’t know piano.😁
From the comments I’ve read, I think I’m not alone in this opinion.

After some thought, I find it quite funny that I, after 7 years of playing the piano, still know next to nothing about chords/chord progressions etc. I have only ever played piano pieces with sheet music, some quite complicated as well and would definetly be considered intermediate level. However, if someone asked me to play a Am7 chord, I would have no idea what they would be talking about. I have never really been bothered by this, since I am still able to play all the music I like with sheet music. But I do think it would be cool to be able to mess around with chords.

I'm watching this again after 16 months of playing, and while I've got most skills of an Intermediate player, I still consider myself a mid to late Beginner. I don't care about speed, I've been working technique and I'm happy with my level of theory. But the knowledge of pianists impresses and humbles me. But it also motivates me.

This was a great presentation and delivered a solid foundation for what to work on. I would say I'm poking into intermediate level in some areas but there are many things that aren't quite there yet. I think it's quite useful to know where you are so you can pat yourself on the back for your progress, and still make it real so you can keep at it where you need to work on. A word about teaching, however - I've discovered that no one teacher provides the perfect formula forward. It's critical to equip those that are new with a few tools so they can creatively play and enjoy themselves without frustration. For example, get people into the black keys quickly because spacial awareness that comes with time will unlock a LOT of enjoyment - like the D, lower A, lower G, lower D and back up. Inversions can move you along quickly too and every newbie needs to discover passing notes. Push beginners into things that sound good quickly. The REAL fun for me isn't mastering songs, it's learning the things I can do to train my musical ear. The interest in songs should come much later when you aren't struggling to find the notes as much. Anyway, you're a treasure and I'm getting more from you now than I did early in my journey. I'm not being critical because I know all of you are trying to find that sweet spot. I'm loving all this...and I'm 72 years old.

strictly speaking, you conflate technique, music theory, and ear training. They are separate skills. So, your video sections are somewhat off. However, the main point seems true to me (as a non-pianist) – I really think you need to be know/hear/execute all of what you mention.

Repent and trust in Jesus. We deserve Hell for our sin. Lying, lusting, etc, but God sent his son Jesus to die on the cross and ride from the grave to free us from sin. If you repent and trust in him youll be saved.
