When people say “gear doesn’t matter” this is exactly what they mean. Vision and skill over gear.
ОтветитьBlue Ruin 4 life
ОтветитьGreat video, totally valid!
ОтветитьI mean this is what Casey Neistat always says, how he really doesn't care about the gear but that everything else is what interests him
Ответитьsoderbergh is the king of camera movies
ОтветитьLike you say, the "gear doesn't matter" commentary only works if you know well what you're doing. It's what most people forget to grasp and then shoot okay stuff with okay cameras but think it's perfect because they indeed used okay cameras and not high end gear.
ОтветитьReminds me of a quote, "The best bike in the world is the one you're riding."
ОтветитьLol soderberg not as famous as anyone involved in the Creator is crazy mang.
To be honest, I don't understand why any of the Creator couldn't have been shot on the fx6. Same sensor, better image quality from the raw readout, and the camera's not as small. Using something with global shutter in a small form factor actually does kind of make sense for the reasons you said. Camera just moves different
saw blue ruin because of you mentioning it in this video and it was a great and wrenching experience. thanks!
ОтветитьWhat's that song at the end?
Ответитьits not the utensil, give da vinci a stick in sand and see
ОтветитьI remember David Lynch hot off Mulholland Drive started using the Sony PD 150. I was blown away that one of the greatest directors ever was using an affordable camera to shoot an entire movie.
ОтветитьThey didn’t use any Sony Venice? I’m asking cause the dude who did their black and white bts film shots took one when they are driving in the car and there are two Sony Venices mounted on the hood.
Ответитьngl i thought this was gonna be a skit
ОтветитьHear hear!
ОтветитьCivil War is a gem-coming from a pro film/digital event photographer
ОтветитьI picked up a panasonic s5iix, an entry level ff camera recently. I plan to use it for at least 10 years. It's FAR more capable than I am.
ОтветитьHi Patrick great video, i have a question how you record your video and talk with that mic?
Ответитьjust subbed for that doggo
ОтветитьI love that the c300 is still relevant to this day. That lamp in the background is kind of distracting.....
Ответитьreminds me whn sean ellis shot Metro Manila on a Canon 5D Mkii, as well as Jason Momoa shot Road to Paloma...we are getting more and more free from the gear.
ОтветитьStop shitting on FX3 homie
Ответить"Victoria" movie was the same, shot on C300 and in ONE TAKE!
ОтветитьGreat content, but duuuuude. That flickering lamp in the background.
ОтветитьCivil war had cool shots but god the story sucked ass lmao
ОтветитьSomeone sounds a little bitter
ОтветитьExcellent video💯
ОтветитьHot take, this video is actually a massive promo for lamps
Ответитьif I did video I would love that canon camera
ОтветитьThe problem nowadays is that stories suck.
ОтветитьThank you Patrick for you work. This was inspiring and helpful.
ОтветитьThe Bokeh in civil war was sometimes horrible. But I don't know, what it was shot with in those scenes.
There are hundreds of reasons why one would choose an Arri over on dji whatever. People with experience in light/color/grading/accessories/postprocess/... in connection with this camera. A camera company not changing the chips every other year. Repairability, serviceability, ruggedness. And so on and so on. Maybe technically we are there, to get the same image quality from mentioned cameras. But it is still hard to find enough people who know this cameras in and out and know how to get to that picture.
I always recognize Sony images out of the box based on the poor skin tones. Will have to watch Presence.
maybe camera is 100th important thing in movie making process
ОтветитьI loved dune part 2 because i really like Denis. It's one of my favourite directors. I've seen the movien directly from the film and....i didn't like it. Seeing in a big screen so much film noise i've found was kinda anachronistic. The details where obiously there but with that amount of noise was for me bad.
ОтветитьOkay... the whole "shot on a potato" was funny the FIRST time it was said... now everyone and their mom just finds it soooo hilarious.. yall can just stop saying that stupid shit now..
ОтветитьGreat to hear Jeremy Saulnier shouted out! We took Michael Carmine's cinematography class at NYU film school together back in the 1990's. He is a good guy.
ОтветитьIf you have these clients — bump your rate up at least 3x. It’ll naturally filter them out. And then it won’t hurt so bad :)
ОтветитьSoderbergh famously went through a phase where he was shooting movies on iPhones. High Flying Bird and Unsane.
Ответить4D for the win !
ОтветитьI forgot the name but there's this movie who is just one continous shot all filmed on an iphone X
ОтветитьDemocratizing at a level I don't think most people get yet.
Ответитьlove how they keep showing shots 50 to 500 feet in the air like EvERyOne CaN afForD to DO thIs
ОтветитьThis movie was the perfect example that gear absolutely matters. I saw it in imax and tgought the projectors were broken
ОтветитьI remember when I was in film school back in 2017. We all made a short film using Arri Alexa and top tier gear. Almost every single one looked like shit.
ОтветитьThe C300 was revolutionary for its time. Check out Jonathan Yi's promo video 'Canon C300 = Awesome' for how different it was from DSLR's. VICE shot much of their early high quality content on the C300.
Gareth Edwards shot The Raid on the Panasonic AF100 micro four thirds cinema camera, which used the same sensor as the GH2.
Upstream Color by Shane Carruth was shot on the GH2 with Voigtlander and Rokinon photo lenses.
I love how you concisely present the information here. Learning about some of these cameras makes me want to track them down and try them out. But, I appreciate you telling it how it is. Great shots and storytelling require experience, skill and talent, the gear is just the tool we use. Thank you.
ОтветитьAnother important aspect is to have a good DOP, as a director myself I know nothing about cameras but I really know what I see in my mind and the DOP knows what to use and what is possible with the budget available.
Ответитьcolor grading goes crazy tho
ОтветитьCan you do a video essay on how to know which camera to use, based on the feeling you want your film to give off? Maybe specifically for beginner film makers? (affordable cameras)
