Is There Really Such Thing As "Stress Free Singing"?

I see many vocal coaches (and their students) promoting the idea that "there should be no stress while singing" and therefore frustrating the heck out of singers who think there is "something wrong with themselves" because they can't, over night,  achieved this "stress free" singing.
(this also gives a vocal coach "tribal knowledge" to keep you coming back to them as the only one who has the answer to this elusive concept)

This is nonsense and here's why:

Singing is like a sport. And with any sport, it's not the absence of stress, it's the management of stress that makes a great athlete.  

Think of it like this:

When Lionel Messi is going to goal, do you think his body is "stressed?"
(Anyone who says it isn't has never played a sport before).

But Lionel has learned the art of training his body and mind for that moment when it's time for him to step on the gas, take on 3 players and score what "looks" like an "effortless goal."

But you can be assured, it was not done "without effort" or without "stress."

Lionel achieved this through training his technical abilities as well as building stamina and muscle memory to achieve this consistency.

Now it is true that some styles of singing require less stamina than others and therefore can be accomplished with less strength training.

In other words, singing a light pop song requires very little "strength" in the sound whereas singing a heavy rock song often requires incredible strength and stamina.

This is also true for those (like myself) that want to push their "limits" and abilities to be all they can be. This of course requires more "effort" and technical training.

With that said, there are many stages to building this "stamina" and it's ok to "find yourself" as one first starts with "damaging street singing" (with total stress) and going through the different stages of learning how to manage this stress away form the voice through correct training.

If I didn't show the different stages of this process, and only showed "perfection", people would never learn that these people are all human, having to work on their craft just like yourself.

I wish I can sing a least a little good. Is their anyway I can get a few tips on how to sing.

Hey ken ! I have a problem, I can only sing good in low ranges or in a low voice and I'm afraid of singing in front of people. I really want to start a pop-punk or pop-rock band (I can write songs and play guitar) with my friends (one drummer and two guitarist) and I really want to be able to sing loud and still sound good. Oh my goodness, Ken Tamplin, I have his Albums! 

so many people on here asking if they can learn to sing like this or that person, just learn to sing like yourself, none of us will ever be freddie mercury, or adele, those jobs are already taken. ken sounds amazing, and though you may be able to hear slight influences (joe cocker maybe), he doesn't sound like anyone else. i need to learn to sing in tune, and sound like me.

I'm a certified closet singer. I belch out songs at home, but will never sing infront of others. I'm participating in a small town pageant for some scholarship money and I am thinking that I might change my talent to singing. I just need some reassurance or guidance in my singing. These lessons you give seem amazing. I will definitely continue to follow your videos :)

By the way, could I also send you a sample for evaluation? I have sang all my life, starting in a very loud rock band at 16-30, then in church from time to time, and home recording my own songs on and off over the yrs. But my problem has always been that I could not get thru a night of 4 hrs gig w/o loosing my voice, and barely able to get thru the next nights gig. That was way back and now at 50 yrs old, I really miss singing, but every time I try, the song will be going great until about 3/4 way thru, then all of a sudden can't hit the highs no more. Like I start to loose my voice? Of course I have never had vocal training. Just wondering how much I have been doing wrong all my life, and if its damaged can it be fixed? and also if I could have nodes? How would one know if they have nodules? Thanks sooo much, and like I said before, u r AWESOME DUDE!   I WOULD KILL TO HAVE YOUR VOICE!

Hey ken, My name is perla and im 13 years old and i have a problem that i only sing good when the artist is singing too ( like i need to hear the original song while im singing) and i've tried to sing the song by myself and i really dont sound right. you sir are amazing... any tips on how to improve a very nasaly voice?  I sound amazing to myself but when I listen to my recorded voice it's terribly nasaly and seems offpitch.
