Is it even possible to tell if a brain thats never experienced any external stimulus is conscious?

She must have been involved in a tragic fishing accident. We have the technology to remove that fishhook from her nose.

I would think that it would be extremely unethical because in case they do become conscious they'll just be used for scientific experiments

I'm guessing this technology is similar to growing meat (as food) in a lab, except that this situation is more demanding, since functionality is an issue (as opposed to flavor and nutrition)?

I think that the day we can either grow or copy (not clone, they're different) a functioning brain or something close enough to it is when the "soul" or "spirit" question is finally laid down to rest. If we can whip up a brain and that brain develops it's own agency, well I think that about settles it right? If we can whip up brain after brain and they don't really do anything that we'd consider thought, we're missing a piece to the puzzle and we haven't been looking in the right place.

One of the guys I work with us named Brian. He is pretty smart so I just call him Brain. Also good reference to autism. I have autism and epilepsy and if love to know more brain science of Autism, so a video on Autism and other conditions like it would be amazing. Thanks SciShow.

Very interesting!

I particularly like that Olivia describes both the achievements and the challenges. This gives much clearer idea of the edge that research have reached and has the effect to involve the viewer (at least me) much more.
Just as a counter-example: the way many theoretical scientists describe their theories (which often are barely more than an educated guess based on complex math) as something established and almost confirmed is a bit off-putting - not necessarily in very negative way, but simply because they fail to involve the people in their field (or at best say something like: "With high-school math skills you can understand what I'm talking about with just two years of intense studying of high-maths" :)) No wonder String-theory failed to produce anything concrete yet!

Great job Olivia!

How can a brain with no body feel or sense much of anything? Most people probably don't think about this, but the concept of self is intrinsically linked to having a body. It may not be possible to have an individual consciousness without a body, or at the very least is would not remotely resemble what we feel as fully formed organisms with bodies.

I had to turn on CC and mute this video because her voice is so annoying.  Every sentence ends on a lazy sounding low note... sounds like she wasn't preparing for the phrase construction (stitching sentences together) editing that would follow in the editing phase of production.

Using 3D printing nanomaterials that'll allow the arrangement of a scaffolding structure to suffice will give way for circulation of oxygenated water/nutrients that will in effect allow neural organoids to grow even LARGER to the capacity of engineering an entire brain.
