I'm plan on putting a Lamborghini Huracan dashboard in my '69 Firebird. I do not plan on hacking the original dash. Remember this when getting one of these cars. So much of it is still great after so many years because it is made of metal. When you get one replace every light bulb, get decent tires, check every electrical connection that has been patched into, check every bushing, get new springs and shocks at all four corners. You should be good after that.

every bump in the road,260-300 horse in a 3200 lb car with standard drum brakes,you better be paying attention.started driving my dads 69 in 73,still driving the car.

You described that well, all the things going on that demand your attention while driving. I love my 76' . I Had to update the drivetrain and take out the tired 350 for a built Pontiac 400. Today its getting to be a rare sighting to see an old muscle car on the streets. Today around here anyway its all about,"Tuners and turbos," Its impressive the horses you can get from a 4cyl. engine, Most of the street racers here count out the V8s with a big carb, cam and good heads But the only "Ricers" that have been able to hang or take the lead are what you mentioned the 300 Z's , Its fun.

love the bird, I drive a 68 firebird every single day with a 461 stroker.  old cars are the shit.  I am SOOO agreeing with not hacking up the dash for a stupid radio.  Mines a bit different... I have c5 corvette 4 wheel brakes on it and a huge 461ci motor, with much stiffer springs and massive tires front and back.

The remarks you've made about old cars--the character, what some may call "lack of refinement" etc. is spot on just about everything I enjoy about my E30.

It feels like it's from a different era, one of slide rules, graph paper and drafting tables, DIY maintenance, relentless german pragmatism and the expectation the owner of the car knows a few things beyond starting the car, and turning on the stereo & AC system.

It's not much of a handful or as demanding as this Firebird, but everything you've said about a "classic" applies!

Not always. As when they made a car in all the different makes, sometimes Chevrolet was the base model bargin one, the Pontiac was the higher level stylish one, and Olds was more luxury, etc.. But yeah I mean I know not all are of course... And hey, the G8 was anything but low quality... I just dont like Chevy because it always overshadows Pontiac... oh well, We can just enjoy them for ourselves then...

I dont get how the american-brands arent capable of building a car these days, witch is as good as back then. Today theyre looking shitty (most of them) and are poorly build (plastic everywhere). Every other brand on earth are at theyre best right now (even Kia) and GM is allmost broke....

if you think about it and simplify the muscle car type, it's a funny thing that from the late 50s to the mid-80s all the american cars are basically the same from a technical point of view. live axle at the back, double wishbone at the front, big v8, auto gearbox, and that's all. if you choose one for daily driving, you actually choose a chassis shape and that's all. :D

Pontiac is the lowest quality of GM to be honest. They went out of business for a reason. However in the 1960s and 70s, they were something different. Chevrolet in general are awesome.

@JeffGlucker - 05.04.2013 18:56

Still, they've both got the same GM bones. Yes, the engines were still separate then though, which was actually kind of a dumb move financially. I agree though, the Pontiac has a much different character than the Camaro. Not saying one is better than the other, just different.

But the best part is that it isnt a Chevy.. Pontiac are so much better... there is just something better.. the design is better, but something else that just makes a Pontiac awesome...

Lovely ride. Personally I would restore it, but I understand why he wants it left original. I wish I had the money for a hobby like that. I would love to get my hands on a old Mustang or Torino or maybe a Javelin. But you have to be very well off to afford to keep cars like that in the shape they deserve.
