Dirt and Rust Thrift Store Find - What is it?

Hello, I have some antique tools and sewing machines that were passed down to me. The problem is that they have rust on them. Can you please tell me what I could use to clean them. Thank-you

Did you ever find out what these were?  They look more like they'd be in a tool box than on a kitchen table to me???
