This is still a bit ridiculous to me given the average charges of vandalism worldwide were less than 10 years with parole and sometimes with community services. Even if some people argue this travel ban, extended sentencing for Johnny Somali, and this 20-30 years in prison is mostly cultural zeitgeist due to Somali's footage of vandalism of comfort women statue, that's still a weak argument because in the UK 2 Just Stop oil members vandalized Stonehenge, a cultural icon for the UK. Phoebe Plummer was sentenced to 2 years to jail, and Anna Holland was sentenced to 20 months in jail. It's not just USA but even in UK and other EU countries and many other countries on average, vandalism charges tend to be lighter. So this case with Johnny Somali it's a special case which South Korea is trying to make an example of Johnny Somali and severely charge him, which a defense lawyer can argue back as abuse of power by the system.

If he gets deported or only one year he will go back to doing the exact thing again and it will make South Korea look weak.
He needs to get 10 years minimum to orove a point, to discourage anyone copying this behaviour and too be honest no one cares if he gets a large term because he is a serial offender with no conscience.

People are amazed that Korea has a 90% conviction rate and Japan a 99.9% (Yes!!!!). These countries, particularily Japan, hate the legal system. They try to solve everything outside the courts. So by the time you go to the court, they have a montain of evidence.

A animal like this Johny Somali barely exists amongst the Japanese, so the system cannot cope with it easily. The Yakusa can. (Japanese Mafia)

This is not like the British-style system.

For those unaware, Korea is a peninsula, and the only way out is boat/plane....or north korea.

Also curious if anyone knows, Im aware felon status makes life much harder in the US, certains jobs wont hire and you cant rent certain places, etc. What about criminals from abroad? A citizen like Johnny who becomes a convicted criminal and eventually returns here to the US, does that follow him here?

Well is it not time for people to realize that when visiting another country, that there rules there laws apply to you the tourist / visitor. Cultures around the world are different so just show respect to the people in the country you visit & all will be well.
I have visited 15 countres around the world & have never had any problem at all, the I have seen people get in a lot of trouble because they do not show respect to where they are & to the people & the country they are visiting !

Could not be happening to a more deserving person. Aside from pranking childishly repugnant, you have to be in all of the stupid is someone who does not understand the cultural offence what he did

I am also thinking that the normal procedures outlined here for making complaints and obtain evidence being bypassed due to instructions from far above. SK everybody knows very top down in its management. The entire industrial landscape and structure where a close group is Keith families ended up controlling virtually all industry was created by unofficial government decree. No doubt this halfwit who has offended arguably the most painful social preoccupation in South Korea, has been the subject of very high-level discussions on the matter

I don't think Korea will jail him. If something happens to him it would look bad on them. They will deport him and maybe make a life long ban. However, when he returns to the states he will need to watch his back.

There’s a few reasons why not keeping him in jail will work in Korea while it certainly wouldn’t work in the USA (or Europe or somewhere else.)
While other countries are big, you can slip away in the crowd, get past border patrol and sneak into another country, etc… You can’t really do that in Korea, at least not easily. It’s at the end of a peninsula, you got two directions to flee:
1) out to sea by boat or plane, but he doesn’t have a passport so unless he can find and convince smugglers to help him he’s stuck there.
2) escape through North Korea. … yeah, that didn’t work out for the last black guy to try that, so I wouldn’t recommend it.
I suppose he could escape to the countryside, but he’s still an obnoxious black guy in Korea, I think they’d find him quickly.
