You called this Toyota both a car, a truck, and a vehicle. So which is it? The name "car" certainly does not fit, since it is a body-on-frame vehicle like a pickup truck and other heavy-duty vehicles.

Exciting build, because there are still plenty of 3rd gen 4runners out there in the world; however, 45psi?! For street pressure?! I usually set my 3rd gen at 32psi all around. 45psi seems too excessive! Lol, whatever makes people happy I guess. Thank you!

Lifting an IFS is a good way to spend a lot of money while making the vehicle less reliable and without gaining anithing signifficant.

Belts, hoses, coolant, water pump, spark plugs, that’s also part of basic maintenance, if you’re actually serious.

It just doesn’t make sense to spend the same amount of money on mods for such an old vehicle compared to a new one. Budget vehicle = budget build. $20k plus into a 26 year old vehicle, that’s basically half of a new 2023 trd off-road, plus the new one is a much better platform to build someday in the future. $17k all in, $5k for this vehicle, $2k for that unplanned head replacement, $10k for EVERYTHING else, including fridge etc.

Another tip for more clearance, before u went tested it out on the trail for the first time. TAKE OFF THE SIDE STEPS 😂 u don’t need them whatsoever and add like 6 inches of clearance on the sides

I agree with the napa CV rationale for a vehicle that is going to remain in the US but you should have used the extended travel cv that allows you to use the full range of your lifts travel without binding up and breaking like the others do at full droop on an aftermarket coilover

This isn't as budget as I thought it would be. You almost rebuilt the whole car before you did mods. I understand what you are saying about old parts but it's not really a budget build.

I liked his explanation of why they changed the parts. When you cut corners your gambling with your rig. Plus his explanation for the axles was very logical and forward thinking.

This was great to watch an "everyman" build, complete with a lot of great ideas for things to look out for. Well done guys.

It was a bit painful to watch your use of the air impact though.... not a torque wrench in sight! The cv axle on my truck has a torque of roughly 70ft/lbs, an impact puts out what, 400+?

I feel this video discourages people from overlanding on a reasonable budget. The modification you performed a way to expensive and unnecessary. The drive shafts you are replacing should have been rebuild with OEM rubber boots. That way you kept the super reliable Japanese parts instead of using NAPA junk. Spare CV joints are needed for repairs on the trail or camps- put one or 2 in the trunk. Skip the lift and just put some new shocks in the vehicle. I feel you did not accomplish your goal to build an overlanding vehicle on a budget. try keeping it under $12000 for the toyota+ equipment and maximize the value and capabilities of the vehicle. throwing thousands of $ at it is no skill.

Older Toyota are great for traveling to the tip of South America, Africa, Australia and many other places due to the fact parts are more accessible.

"Extreme capabilities" is not possible without a solid front axle. Very good capabilities, yes. Extreme? Hardly. Seriously, how many buggies have you ever seen running IFS?

Watched this video when it first came out and love it. I recently came up on a 99 4runner sr5 sport edition 198k 4x4 rear locker and TRD supercharger. Top end was recently rebuilt along with cooling system. Paid $7,500. This video is going to help me restore my 4runner. Thanks for the great content.

One thing you guys didnt say but when lifting a vehicle with a track bar either front or rear, in this case rear, an adjustable length one is important to keep axle centered in vehicle

this is a very cool series, now i don't think id call it a budget build, as some things you could do differently to achieve the same goal, but none the less a great start. Id also like to say for people who like to work on their own or trail repair, when doing most of this not the tools and what your doing, i love have my own quick guide to stuff ive already done to help get it done, and its also a great way to know what minimal tools to carry.. I cant wait to start my Pan America build if i don't take my ADV. and again great job

New here and subscribed after watching this video. It’s content like this; progressive builds; I enjoy. Could I possibly responsibly afford an all out build like this ones end goal…yes maybe. Do I or the average weekend warrior need to..no as long as you know your limit. It’s builds like these that point out key points where anyone can say yes that’ll be my stoping point or what are other options at this point to fit means my end goal.

Some great advice, but some serious things you forgot to suggest or recommend. Awesome replacing parts with oem Toyota stuff but when you start using aftermarket Napa axles. You clearly show how little you understand about the aftermarket parts industry. You are way better rebuilding OEM parts then installing poor quality “ so called “ new aftermarket parts. I personally have had a axle manufacturer replace 4 parts of axles then finally refuse to warranty them any longer. Which I went back to oem axles Just FYI new aftermarket does not guarantee anything may times worse
