Steve Wozniak speaks on Right to Repair

I've seen Wozniak at older in-person Apple events and he just looks pissed off that his company that he helped found and develop product for has gone in this direction.

I wish you never had left Apple, you might not have the focus on profitability like your namesake, and more significant, his tendency to impose limitations to your designs , but from an engineering standpoint you were 'the duck's guts' in my opinion. I now run a little computer repair shop in the Netherlands, and stopped servicing Apple devices because of those deliberatly designed limitations in their products.

In short, I didn't like the course Apple took after you left, and despite their economical success, I still don't like their pollicy.

Apple is an overpriced anti-consumer disgrace specifically because Wozniak left Apple and it's been that way all the way back since the day he left.

Everybody talks about success stories and role models and go almost straightaway to Steve Jobs. Jobs was a charismatic fellow and in some ways admirable, but every techy knows Wozniak is the greatest success. :)

The right to repair push is going to lock even more apple into its own decadence , any monopolized company does .just look ate records .

Calling it the “right to repair” doesn’t fully capture the size of the problem.

The problem is corporate ABUSE and EXPLOITATION of consumers. Look at Apple now (just one example of many) - they ILLEGALLY void your warranty if you open a phone, use coded components that don’t work in other devices, shut down functions if you attempt to repair something, and generally treat consumers like serfs on its digital plantation. The EU had to mandate them to include replaceable batteries, which all phones once had.

A hundred years ago, the people fought back when corporations treated employees like serfs, with company stores, union busting, restrictive employment contracts, etc. Whole political movements and schools of thought were constructed around labor rights, the right to compete, and the importance of owning the means of production.

Now, corporate owners are trying to prevent people even from owning the means of consumption. I’m sick of it.

i always appreciated Steve W.!!!! I always felt he never got the acknowledgement and credit for his important contributions to the PC industry. I hope people centuries from today will be able to read and appreciate this great man's work.

The excuses from the status quo support group fail to think compartmentalization, optimum service life/usefulness vs one short term usage. Conformists/boot lickers stymie progress imo.

The designed obsolescence foolishness squanders resources that profiteers can't see past their greed to recognize. Good planning beats greedy opportunism imo.

So protective of a consumer to not open and be able to repair your property but then have it build in a foreign country that is know for stealing others invention. And violating patents while using forced labor. Wow!! Thank you Steve Wozniak For staying a true tech enthusiast. I personally Gave up on companies like Apple not because they have a bad product but because of the extent of the corporate Greed and their Lobbing to get away with it.

Ahhh dont you still own a lot of apple stock ? Could you please get them to embrace the right to repair and make public the specifications to iphones and other apple products ?

I would be more interested in watching a movie about Woz´s life to this day, than having to re- watch Job´s movie. I think a biographic movie about Woz´s life it´s going to leave a more fruitful and useful teaching to younger generations than the general greediness message people get from watching the life of Steve Job.

The first Mac commertial was about resisting the big company reminiscent of the 1984 novel. Now Apple has become the very thing it claimed it was not going to be.

Elon Musk didn't invent Tesla technology. Steve Jobs didn't invent the first Apple computer. Bill Gates didn't design the Windows OS. They are just the guys who capitalized off highly skilled engineers who were just having fun with technology.

An Apple co-founder -- pretty much Mr. Apple, himself, in fact -- supports right to repair products from a company that's pioneered the opposite. I prefer Woz's way of thinking over Apple's. Thank you, Steve!

I can understand if companies don't want to support modified hardware or software... then they should really spend more energy on making it so that it's easier for them to prove when it's no longer truly "their product" ... and the other way around be able to prove that something is piracy.

Copyright still exists even if you open source everything. GPL still protect the author from companies modifying something and selling it without releasing their improvements.

Creative Commons has a slew of pre-made licenses to choose from that are already watertight legalese designed to protect your IP, despite it being openly available to the public.

Keeping everything entirely closed and fighting your own customers isn't a great way to run a business today. If you make sure that your product and your support is the best, customers will pay attention when you release a new product.

At the very minimum, the right to repair would be nice if it included the right (ability) to install a new battery.

imagine if this guy stay at apple instead of steve job. Imagine the technology advancement we get right now. But here we are, people keep worship greedy people like steve job. While he just sitting on his desk waiting for his engineer to design a product and then pray to god it will be success. you know, you like it or not when you try enough sooner or later some of your trail will become huge success

Woz was the true brains of apple. I have never been an apple fan, but have always admired Woz. Its too bad his cofounder was such a narcasistic menopolistic jackass. I am surprised when Woz was talking about the Ma Bell monopoly, he didn't touch on the acoustic couplers they would use to get around the regulations since technically nothing was connected to the telephone networl diretly.
