To be fair it’s not just K-pop, South Korea is a hyper competitive environment across the board, it’s just as unsettling in the academic/corporate space.

Hallyu is the best marketing campaign - ever!! As a marketer, I am in awe of how such a small Asian, non-English speaking country has conquered the world with their culture. But of course, like all marketing campaigns, those of us in the business know the reality can be quite different from the marketing hype LOL. Trends come and trends go but hopefully in that time, there is some genuine exchange of understanding between cultures so we become more tolerant of each other's differences - and even come to embrace them.

"accidentally stumbled into this restaurant" meanwhile it's a known tourist spot due to BTS' history, and any investigative journalist would have heard about it, especially when focusing on 'hallyu' 💀 but nice try.

Kpop is just early 2000s american pop music. Their dancing, choreography, their music and style is just far too much of an immitation.
Its just remixes. Its fine, but it isnt at all "popular" in america or europe. Its as niche as emo music today

Why K-wave is true?
Because it's real life in Korea, not fake everywhere and everything!
The world will be happy 'cause of K-wave, 'cause those are real, not fake!
Everyone on earth, the products of Samsung and LG makes all happy!
Keep those in your house!
You can trust !!!!
It's all indeed!!!

IMHO Americans do not have a culture. So, immersion into another culture is attractive. Many "cultures" are thousands of years old, their mythology, philosophy, religion and way of life has appeal. But, another perspective is that all cultures have been dramatically altered by toxic capitalism and dense urban development where work becomes the focus of people's life. Corporate culture has no culture, so I think people are dying spiritually.

In spite of the delusions of K-pop, it cannot be denied that Asian women still crave the superiority of BWC. It is only natural.

These are such narrow views by few ppl. Hallyu was never been built to overturn U.S. dominance in Softpower. Korea will not become a melting pot like the U.S. As a Korean American, reporter really needs to report from the view of S. Korea, not as a view from an American perspective.

on the foreign people with a korean name thing: most people who immigrate to another country choose a local name, heck, you can take a french class for a semester and walk away with knowing how to order off a menu and a french name. I don't know why when it's people doing it in a country that does not have a lot of immigration, it suddenly is being pushed back like the name is cultural appropriation. it's literally just people who want to have a choice in their name, knowing not everyone has the cultural background to pronounce unfamiliar sounds and may not flow well in the local language

Watching this documentary has made me realize that it's time for us humans to redefine the meaning of the word "Dream" - is it really worth it for us to pursue our "dream" when in the process of pursuing that dream we are actually destroying ourselves instead? I actually agree with that girl who decided to get out of the K-pop group because of the diet restriction... Sacrificing her own physical and mental health only to get that specific body figure, to me is really not worth it.. because at the end of the day, we are responsible to our own well being.. so making decisions for our own good is really important.. ❤ always take care of yourself guys

It's wild because so much of internationally recognized Kpop is still dependent upon Blk (US-based) music producers, choreographers, aesthetics, etc. I just absolutely hate the idea that you can become an example of "soft power" by continuing systematic industrial exploitation of African descendant peoples in the US.

I wish Americans like Joi Lee would question why they have to pathologize everything and act like everyone is a victim and weakness is a virtue. This is the very Western mindset but its not universal. The Western mindset has justified imperialism and colonialism for a long time ("these poor people over there need a savior") using this savior complex.
Korea has problems, like everywhere, but Korea also has so many great things going for it. But the last thing that Korea needs is Western opinion or western saviors. Look at the US, look at any big city in the US which is full of homeless people, drug addicts, broken families, violence...and tell me that the US has any business lecturing others. Try focusing on fixing the US. Fix homelessness, fix drug addiction, and fix the broken family and then you can talk about something.

Did you know that South Korea has one of the worst rates regarding discrimination against women, sexual harassment, domestic violence and pedophilia? People have been brainwashed by Korean propaganda through pop culture (K-pop and doramas), but they are not aware of the dark side of South Korea.

Female K-pop singer Sulli killed herself because she talked about her feminist ideas online and she received cyber bullying by Korean misogynistic men. Megalia, a Korean feminist website, was banned in Korea. Misogyny and anti-feminism is institutionalized by Korean government and society. The question is: what is the west doing about it?

You confirm what I have long suspected. K-pop is just an industry product with mass production of "idols". You don't have to have talent or be creative - just fit in the mould. This isn't art, this isn't authentic. As many contemporary forms of music, painting, dance and performance K-pop is a craze that will eventually expire with no real legacy. When you see or read the works of artists of old whose legacy lasts today, you will know what I mean. It's not following the pattern and the dream to be and behave as others that made them great. It was their authenticity, their courage of doing something on their own. Real art is not only about the skills but also about this inner spark. You can train people as you train animals to perfom diffent tricks, but...where's the meaning in all of this? And it's not only about K-pop, it's about the culture in general, not only in Korea!
