To equate Forest Gump a fictional character to a real life situation in Vietnam is absurd. As a staff sergeant in Vietnam I was a personnel staff NCO. We screened troops thoroughly to be educated and trained in their specific occupation. Combat personnel trained long hours at their skilled jobs like their lives were dependent on it. Which in many cases their skills required saving their buddies. Aptitude testing was mandatory. Many enlisted personnel who didn’t reach a skilled set maintained a job at a military installation in conus not in Vietnam. Only 25 percent of the military force in the combat zones were draftees. Jobs in the military offered school benefits and a way of life out of poverty. This crap about lowering standards is idiotic and an injustice to the Vietnam Vet.
