Situation awareness more like Stupid Negligence on the Captain that is just unacceptable he was told 3 times about fuel? Don’t make any sense
ОтветитьThis landing gear problem had happened before. The main landing gear retract cylinder failed. This cylinder retracts the landing gear when it is raise. It also acts as a shock absorber when the landing gear is extended. If there is a total hydraulic failure the landing gear is extended by releasing the UP Locks and the gear just free falls into position. The retract cylinder acts as a shock absorber and stops the cushions the extension. If the retract cylinder has a structural failure the landing gear just slams down and probably not give a safe gear indication. Because the weather was good they had very little extra fuel. Once you put the landing gear down you start to burn fuel very quickly. I flew the DC8 as both as F/O and Captain and the only option the Captain had was to land immediately. The F/O and S/O should have been more forceful insisting they land NOW. Some things have to be expressed in loud. four letter words to get the point across. The Captain would have thanked them.

My house was about 500' away.
The aircraft was largely intact, but had broken enough that much of it's styrofoam insulation littered the street for miles.
Running out of fuel because you aren't paying attention is one of the dumbest ways there is to crash a plane.
Do they put cameras on the belly of the planes now day's? Seems so simple, cars all have them for backing up

ОтветитьEmergency landings suck, and most of them end in not the best way. but you at least landed in somewhat a “controlled” manner.
delaying trying to land because “it doesn’t feel right” is just ludicrous when you have no fuel. you don’t get to choose how you land at that point. just get it done :(
