I've been thinking about a ryepa, that's funny, you go girl!!! Have you ever tried DC's recipe? Interesting you adding vienna, I recently heard about an IPA/Pale with 50/50 2 row and vienna and nothing else? I may try that w/ 2-3# of the now since I saw your vid 👍 Also want to try that Flowmax stuff I've seen on utube ads, supposed to help with sticky mash's sounds like, as well as generally better efficiency I guess. Look forward to the tasting to see what you think of that recipe!!

That's very clean yeast, but make sure you have enough head space or blow off tube ready.

Love the rye, made a chocolate rye ipa last summer. Sounds gross right? It was flipping fantastic and all my peeps loved it.

I agree. Re-hydration is just another point in process an infection can be introduced, you are doing extra work to increase the risk. Pros pitch bricks of dry yeast directly onto the wort as well. There is more then enough yeast in an 11g dry yeast pack for 20 L of most beers, even if some die because the sugar concentration is too high. If its over 1080 maybe use 2 packs, but when it comes to yeast health proper oxygenation is much more important then hitting a specific pitching rate regardless of the starting gravity.

Can we please let re-hydrating dry yeast go the way of secondaries once and for all?

I usually brew on the Grainfather G30, which basically is a BIAB as well, but I do sparge to boost the efficiency (which never seemed to be a problem for your brews :D ).
And yes, when brewing rye beers I noticed the troubles you mentioned. Even with a fraction of as low as 6% rye malt the sparge took longer than usual. But it's really worth it; the bready rye flavours can give beers a very unique and rustic twist and I definitely recommend experimenting with other grains than barley once in a while. Since I'm also interested in beer history, I like to experience how beers tasted 200, 500 or even 3000 years ago. This opens the gate to a whole new world of recipes and grains like emmer and einkorn. Though I have to say: Those beers mostly are worth trying, but afterwards I enjoy regular barley and wheat beers to cleanse the palate ;-)
Thank you for sharing this recipe with us. Best wishes for 2021.

Thank you Flora! It is very interesting to think outside the box and take the initiative to use different malts. You always surprise us in the recipes. Congratulations!

I like the video, the recipe sounds good. I would drop the Carapils/carafoam with that much rye, I just don't think it would do anything. The folks at UCLA Berkley found that it often caused head retention problems a few years back and suggested using rye and wheat! So yeah, probably gonna crib from your recipe here if I go to do a RyePA in the next month or so. Cheers! Thanks for the great videos.

Hi Flora.
I've been watching almost every single video about rye and I think this is the best one.
I'll check the brewing one now.

You make creating a recipe look so easy! Gotta love Brewfather though.
I'd love to see more from you on hop additions. How much to use of what hops and when to add them, and why. Would a simple beginners strategy be to use just one hop type and spread it over say 60, 30 and 5 minute additions so you get some bitterness and some aroma?
