Absolutely Anything. Anybody else watch that movie? I watched it today after first seeing it in 2017 or so whenever it came out in America. The movie is hilarious but i was pleasantly surprised today when i realized that Brian Cox played a role in the movie. (I didnt know aboit him until 2 or 3 years ago and have since become a fan and wish id have been a student of his) Anyway, if you like Ricky Gervais, you'll like the movie "Absolutely Anything", even though he's not in it.

Brilliant interview and fascinating subject matter (dark or otherwise). You should have pushed him more on what "flat" means, because it's not intuitive. What it means is that two parallel lines will remain parallel no matter how long they are (or which direction you start them off in) - this is "flat" Euclidian geometry (angles of a triangle add up to 180 degrees etc). If the universe wasn't flat, those two lines would at some point converge or diverge. What it doesn't mean is that the universe has no volume or that it is two-dimensional.

I could listen to Brian talk about concepts of physics for days on end. He makes them so approachable, interesting and provides a larger framework for why they're important for us to understand as humans. Why we need science, why we learn.

have seen so many clips from this interview, that finally managed to watch through the whole thing in a few sessions. still fantastic, and insightful and useful. Certainly always trying to tell my design students that uncertainty is good, and not knowing means you're exploring new things

🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:

Brian Cox introduces himself and his background in particle physics. They discuss Joe's podcast reaching a wider audience.
Brian talks about his work at CERN with the Large Hadron Collider, discovering the Higgs boson particle and quark-gluon plasma. He explains what CERN is.
They discuss the vastness and age of the universe, and how difficult it is for humans to comprehend such large scales. Brian emphasizes the value of science in providing a framework for exploring questions about meaning and existence.
Brian believes microbial life is likely common in the universe, but complex extraterrestrial life is probably very rare. He explains how life emerged on Earth over billions of years.
Brian provides an overview of dark matter, which makes up most matter in the universe but does not interact with normal matter except gravitationally. Dark energy makes up about 70% of the universe and is driving its accelerating expansion, but its nature remains a mystery.
They discuss some of the unsolved problems in physics like dark energy, the Higgs field's role in generating mass, and the possibility of new undiscovered particles. Brian emphasizes the value of uncertainty and constant learning in science.
Brian explains how his live show conveys the scale and wonder of the universe to audiences. He uses state of the art visuals to illustrate complex physics concepts.
Brian expresses his enjoyment of the conversation and invites Joe to attend one of his live shows.

The universe sizes and numbers are out of our human mind, the distances are way beyond comprehension. Let alone those trillions galaxies, even our own solar system, we almost cannot picture it to scale, because on exact scale, if our earth size as big as small marble , its distance still need more than 170 meters from the sun in real scale, and with earth as a small marble, our solar system need more than 10 Km of empty space to place them all in a real scale

How can we comprehend light years distances to scale? Those numbers, studies, calculations etc. from all physicysts, are all become philosophical things
