Ole Frahm on ’The Language of Comics’
Comics establish in the late 19th century an epistemological rupture that calls the truth claim of language and image into question by parody and a certain self-reflexivity. Many approaches in comics theory try to ignore this rupture and understand comics as a language, defining grammar, syntax and semantics. Discussing examples as different as Krazy Kat and Dargar the Invincible, this talk will try to argue that not the syntax, but the performativity of the different signs in comics matters.
Ole Frahm works and lives in Frankfurt (Germany) as member of the artist group LIGNA. He founded the Research Center for Graphic Literature (Arbeitsstelle für Graphische Literatur – ArGL) at the University of Hamburg and published essays and books about the theory, history and aesthetics of comics and the representation of the Holocaust in Comics. With Hans-Joachim Hahn and Markus Streb he edited „Beyond MAUS. The Legacy of Holocaust Comics“ (2021).
