Total Retro Entertainment and Technology Video 1

This is the first true video in the Total Retro Entertainment and Technology (TREAT) series. It is a demonstration of how to play ZX Spectrum games on a Nintendo DS, which is the fulfillment of a wish to play such games on a portable device.

The Nintendo DS also can play Commodore 64 and Atari 8-bit games, along with multiple consoles, however, for purposes of this video, I only look at the ZX Spectrum.

You will need:

A Nintendo DS (or any variant of that system, including the 3DS series. The stylus will also help a lot.

A micro SD card, but you really don't need more than 16GB for the home computers. You'll need more for consoles, and other things.

Access to the internet to download ZX Spectrum games.

ZXDS pretty much emulates all of the ZX Spectrum series of computers, but there are some limitations. If a game doesn't allow for a joystick, the keyboard can be set up through the custom keys command, but you will find it limiting. You'll need the stylus to access the keyboard, which is good and bad since it allows for typing and works OK with text adventures, but not in a fast-paced game.

This was shot using my cell phone, with a desktop tripod, while holding the device in front of me. I won't be using that method again, since I have better equipment that I need to use more often. I saw how unsteady my hands are in the video, but the demonstration is there.

I plan on alternating between direct computer emulation and device demonstrations. For example, the next video will be using an i3-1215u laptop to demonstrate some emulation (this will be a multi-part series, as I will go in depth), which will be followed by a demonstration of the ZX Spectrum Next issue 2 (I finally got it after more than 3 years, but I had already purchased an issue 1).
