You might be hearing about states and countries legalizing psychedelics. In 2020, Oregon became the first US state to decriminalize psilocybin and legalize it for therapeutic use. In 2022, Colorado followed suit. Researchers have recently been touting the benefits of psychedelics for health conditions like depression, anxiety, PTSD, addiction, cancer-related distress, and the list goes on. However - like cannabis - psilocybin is still illegal under US federal law.

Given that ongoing fight, you might have questions. I know I do. Are psychedelics the next weed? Is that a good thing? Are psychedelics dangerous? Do they actually have scientific benefits? How do psychedelics work? In this episode of Huge If True, we find out.

I have taken shrooms once and it made my brain understand what made me depressed and how it isn't something to be depressed about. I feel pretty much good as new with only a small number of short lived depressive episodes wich I honestly think is nothing more than the effect of imposter syndrome or simply being tired.

I understand that it won't help everyone, but it was huge for me as someone with untreatable depression where no antidepressants made a blind bit of a difference.

Psychedelic shrooms really helped me I tried taking them for fun and despite being dragged through the 4th layer of Hell I came out happier and healthier.

Not only has it helped with depression I’ve become more social and now use THC for medicinal purposes rather then smoke it until my lungs bleed and I start having an existential crisis

ive suffered from depression and anxiety until psychedelics changed my life for the better, however it would have been an absolute nightmare to trip in a medical setting, in my eyes the ultimate horror trip. psychedelics should be legal and accessible to anyone who know about the risks and dangers. if politicians want to gatekeep, they should create something like a driving license but for psychedelics instead of threating innocent people with fines and jail time

You got it right. Its based on fear and control. There isnt a war on drugs. Just SOME drugs. The best society to control is one who fears and depressed. Also unfortunately the worst existence to have which is where we find ourselves in now.

If opiods are legal and alcohol is legal, both with serious toxicity than psychedelics that are much safer and have well documented healing properties should be legal.

ive never taken drugs, but i do drink. i think we should treat grown ass adults like grown ass adults again. free to make their own decisions. they should be able to just go down and buy this stuff from wherever and use it at their leisure. heck, a lot of science these days is pointing towards drug use being how the human mind evolved the way it has in the first place. how inventions were made, civilizations built, art created etc. eat work sleep with no creativity or enjoyment is not the grey future we should be heading to. add some damn colour back.
this is a complete 180 on my views 5-10 years ago where i was very anti drug. i didnt even think cannibis should be legalized back then, now i do. 100%

I also hold a J.D. and am admitted in two sates and all the way up he U.S. Supreme Court. I am published by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and a Former Assistant Attorney General. I hold dual nationally and and am a Swiss lawyer as well as having worked or been admitted in Singapore and Malaysia. I also had an "issue" with VP. I have managed to stay alive and had an issue with VP. That in itself is a miracle. I lost 15 years of my life due to ignorance and their destruction of my reputation and use of "psychological warfare" which my former boss heard about through his former Russian clients and told my docs and I knew but who would believe me...not now but they would have and do now but in-between....they are good at hurting your severely if they fail at killing you.

It should not be legal except for therapeutic use and medical studies and needs. We as a country are getting out of hand with legalizing a drug to enable new income without fully understanding the negative neurological and mental health effects in a long term study.

How many vets from the Vietnam war wouldn’t have killed themselves if they had access to these treatments? How many people would’ve lived fulfilling lives if they weren’t in jail for possession? Would there be so many young ppl on SSRIs and heavier pharmaceuticals today? Stopping/ slowing scientific research and sensationalism got us into this mess. Glad to see a nuanced coverage of this topic.

What is seriously lacking in this video and the conversation about psychedelics in general is the importance of cognitive liberties. These drugs were banned because the people who took them were going against the status quo, not because they are inherently dangerous. Psychedelic therapy is a wonderful thing, but is not the only context in which these substances are beneficial.

I took LSD and mushrooms about a dozen times when I was between 16- 19. I wasn't testing for scientific results, I was partying with my friends. It was 100% pleasant, except for being tired the next day. It's been 40 years since I've taken any, and there have been no negative side effects. It's the only drug that I might do again. None of the others hold any interest for me.

my personal interest is where the patient thinks they have done something amazing, no one can acknowledge it however just like an observed particle measuring it's existence changes it's location. In theory even if it just came down to a positive social experience how are we sure our manifestations aren't materialized in a spiraling duality.
