If you game all the time, the power savings alone are going to pay for the higher price of the laptop compared to a desktop, over a year or two. And the performance difference is pretty negligible. This is all true at least where I live where the extra couple hundred watt draw from the desktop would easily run me another $50 a month in electric bills.

Personally I look more at temps rather than a few fps difference. My 4080 is reaching 80c right now and it ain't even summer here yet. Laptops just thermal throttle into the ground here even in winter. Many people hating the huge coolers on 40 series but it has been a big plus for me.

Considering the laptop "4090" is literally the 4080 with lower clock speeds on core AND memory, this makes sense. Its blatantly misleading of Nvidia to have given it that name, but of course no one is surprised. It's also like searching for a needle in a hay stack trying to find power limits on laptop GPUs on any website not directly operated by a manufacturer. So glad I just kept my 2070 super laptop and got a desktop this gen

If the laptop version can’t deliver the same performance than its desktop counterpart then it simply shouldn’t have the same name, it should be something like rtx 4085M

Your 4080 gpu clocks seem very low, mine does 2770Mhz out of the box without changing anything, with 3x 8pin.

The Laptop 4090 has the same chip as the Desktop 4080, but uses 40% less power than the Desktop 4080, but is still almost as fast. Doesn't that make any sense? If you cap the desktop 4080 at 160w TDP, it would be slower than the laptop 4090, wouldn't it? Of course, the efficiency gets worse and worse the more watts a card consumes, but I wouldn't have thought that the difference between the two would be so small.

As I know RTX4090 laptop is a desktop RTX4080 with less voltage and less speed. It has the same number of CUDA cores and the same VRAM. That's why they are so close. Such laptop turns out to be better than a huge desktop with 3090, but it will also cost a lot. And it is also interesting how much noise such laptop causes, because you need to cool it really good with max power. But if you have money to buy it, it is a very nice thing to have.
