Choosing between the Canon PRO-200 or PRO-300 13" desktop photo printers

Interesting, if I’m selling prints they’re being handled by others. We must have a different definition of what it means to “hand out images with impact.”

If you need to use these printers for “office or school” printing, are they drastically more expensive than a regular colour printing when it comes to ink costs because they are using photo quality inks? We do have a black and white laser printer for all text related printing.

When you’re talking about a slight spots of gloss differential on prints…is that noticeable if the photo is framed and behind glass?

I’m also going to purchase the 200 based on your fine review. There are comments on canon web as to it intermittently not printing certain colors. I assume its user error. You dont mention the problem.

I will be printing to adhesive backed vinyl. Will that make a difference between the two?

Hi Keith, I was wondering about the VOCs produced when printing between the Pro200 and the Pro300? Are dye inks or pigment inks more toxic to print with? thanks for your amazing content :)

Also, I can only find information that pigment ink has better longevity over dye ink, but in regards to these two printers, what is the 200's longevity of colour? It's hard to find anything about how long they should be fade resistant (as a product sold as a print to be put on the wall inside someone's home). I understand pigment is better, but does the 200 work at all or will they all fade in a matter of months.. I don't think I can afford a pigment printer right now but would like to at least get the Pro 200 and sell some prints.. or is that not okay due to fading (I have no idea how bad fading is, it's so hard to find anything on this subject in specific detail).

Would the Pro 200 print a nice enough art print on matte paper?

I am just starting my wedding stationery business and for the beginning planing to print my works at home (it will mostly be black ink text on textured, vellum and cotton paper roughly 300gsm more or less, envelope printing and pattern printing). I originally wanted to go for pro300, but after watching your video, looks like pro200 will be enough for my needs. What would you say? Thank you an advance for your answer.

I recently purchased the Canon 200 printer, good prints the problem is when I print the fonts, they are blurry, blurry. No matter what, I'm using Illustrator, Indesign and using high quality press and still, can you give me any advice?

I purchased the 200 based on your review and I found it makes incredible prints. Much better than what I was able to get from online print services.

Hi, not sure if you’ll have an opinion on what I’m looking to get a printer for. I am currently saving up to buy a printer and have the pro 300 in mind for astrophotography printing. Maybe more ‘general’ photography in the coming years.
I currently only want to print my work off to put up in my office at home etc, but later on when I’ve mastered everything related to the hobby I may look at selling some prints.
My question, if you have an opinion, is which of these do you think I would get better results for my current needs? The price would mean I could obviously get the 200 a lot sooner but I’d rather ‘measure twice cut once’!

Hello! I have a canon PRO 300 that displays error 5B00. I contacted a service, and the people there told me that there was nothing more I could do. Can I still solve this problem? Thank you!

So my 100s just died on me. (5 years of service, now it won't turn on)
Now I need a printer fast(I sell prints) but something is puzzling me:

The obvious choice would be the pro-200 (its the replacement from the 100s)
before I had the Pro-1 and I really liked the prints (Especially the B&W prints) and felt that it was easier to get nice prints out of the box with the pro-1

Now I ditched the Pro-10 when buying ther 100s because of the ink price. the pro 100s seemed like a the best package when it came to print speed and the price of ink.

Now googling Inks for the pro-200 and pro-300 in my country It seems like the price of pro-300 ink carts is almost the same as pro-200 carts.
I can also find value packs for the pro-300 but not for the pro-200.

I thought that the ink carts was much pricier for the 300 than the 200 (As it was for the 100s VS pro10 and Pro-1

back in the day the pro-1 value pack was around 235 GBP... the value pack of the pro-300 is around 158 gbp

It makes me tempted on the pro-300..or am I missing something in my calculations?

Hi, I’m thinking about getting a new printer and saw this review of canon pro 200 and 300 and also about Epson ecotank 8550. Do you really got moore prints with Epson ? And how is the quality of the printings comparing to canons 200. Canon 200 has a moore reasonable price but with Epson you also get a scanner and maybe save som money on inc?

Are the print heads replaceable on the pro-200, as they are on the pro-300?

What would you say comparing between Canon and Epson printers?…

So, the Dye is still supreme on superglossy, while the Pigments give a wider gamut. And Dyes are better for skin tones and Pigments for Landscapes.

I usually print on Luster paper ("Semigloss"). Of people in landscapes.

And I just poofed my Pixma 9000mkII (that has served me since its release).

Do I go for the 200 or splurge on the 300?

Hi. I have had a Pro300 for past 6 months and loving it. Just a quick question, yesterday I stupidly for the first time I put some lustre paper the wrong side in printer. To my horror the print obviously came out completely wet! I printed another print immediately the correct way round and it seemed to be fine. My question is will there be a problem inside the printer with the wet ink from the bad print? Perhaps ink getting on exit rollers or somewhere else? My prints seem ok it’s just I’m worried that there could be lasting damage or problems ahead with my expensive printer! Maybe I’m worrying too much as it’s the one and only time I have done it. Any reassurance would be most grateful!! Simon

I saw in several reviews from people that both have the same issue, problems with paper size detection, I was near to buy one but the paper size issue stopped my decision

I am considering upgrading my old PIXMA Pro 100 with the hopes of trying my hand selling photo greeting cards at a farmers market next summer. If the updated Pro 1000 comes out, I will be very tempted to go that way. If I decide to get one sooner, do you have thoughts on which of the 200 vs 300 would do a better job handling foldable photo cards?

Very good videos indeed! What is your opinion on handmade book (very low volume editions) printing with those (b4/b5 format, 95% bw text) when in no rush and aiming for archival lasting? Meanwhile photo printing seems appealing. Kinda multifunctional :)

Funny. The pro 200 costs 575 euro at the cheapest in Greece, in one place. The rest sell them for around 700 euro. The pro 300 only costs between 580-599 euro at four places, and in total six places sell them for up to 605 euro, before it bumps up to 700. So where I currently live (Greece), the Pro 300 is actually generally cheaper to buy.

I am primarily interested in getting one of these printers for HTV (vinyl heat applications for clothing) but am very interested in the photograhical results these also yield. Do you know if these are good for HTV or not? I know it's maybe not your area of interest (being an architect and all) but just thought I'd chance it and ask anyway.

For a colour print on a bright white lustre photo paper like Permajet Oyster 271 or Pinnacle Premium Lustre Paper, if longevity is not an issue, is there much to choose between the 200 and 300? I can see the 300 has a wider gamut in greens/blues on various ICC profiles, but possibly even on lustre paper the 200 might be more vibrant? Thanks!

Thank you for this helpful video, I also intend to start a small art print business and decided on using German Etching art paper (310gsm). I originally bought an Epson x1500 and found it good for the first 30 prints, then it started rejecting the paper through the back feed and didn’t perform at all.
I now have to start all over again and try to choose the correct printer for my needs, would you have any advice? I’m leaning towards the Cannon 300 as per your advice, but am also on a tight budget, so not sure? I mostly just want the printer to be able to take the heavy stock paper on a regular basis. 😅

thanks Keith, this video helps me a lot. I'm going back and forth about pigment and ink, A3+ or A2+ etc. Compared to Epsons HD XP-15000 my feeling is that the pro-200 is superior in quality and the best ink based printer at the moment. I'll definitely won't have the throughput to justify the p900 or pro-1000's expenses - especially for ink usage due to maintenance.
I guess the internal conflict is settled now. ;-)
