I have to agree with a lot of this but I think the roles are changing to embrace ai so a lot of the replaceable roles that you mentioned are actually changing to new roles that we can't put a name to at the moment

Great video as usual. I think we are entering a new era for UX designers. AI will be our own personal assistant and can be leveraged to bring a lot of efficiency to our workflow as designers. As your example on the design system, AI can automate a number of flows, allowing us to focus on more strategic decisions which have higher impact to en users.

Human interaction will not be a problem for AI in the right context. So I would not use that variable in your matrix. What is hard for AI is the fluid/abstract problem solving in combination with strategic thinking. It can solve very concrete problems. But 'thinking outside of the box' is harder.

I would define your axes like this:

X: Abstract problem solving — Concrete problem solving
Y: Strategic tasks — Operational tasks

First to go will be the roles that deal with Concrete problem solving and Operational tasks. Working on a design system falls into this category, but so does creating screens with that design system.

The last roles to go are the roles that deal with Abstract problem solving and Strategic tasks. Here you will find design leaders and product designers who are busy with problem validation, research and finding product market fit through lean experiments. These roles can actually benefit from AI by using AI to prototype a lot faster.

Design tools will become super functional and smart in terms of generating or creating designs.
It will also cut a tons of small/mid size jobs.
If you are a thoughful and good designer then no need to worry! but if you are not then you must start working on it.

Love your videos but I think you're underestimating a few things. It's only a matter of time until some AI app gets pumped full of every design system ever created and will be able to create a new design system immediately that will most likely be better than anything a human can produce in a year. Humans are very imperfect at system thinking while AI is excellent at it. There are just so many things for a human to keep in mind... Every state, every edge case.

The same goes for landing page designs and even consumer apps. Once you have a large enough data set AI would be able to spit out countless versions of fully baked designs. Humans may need to tweak a few things but most of the work will be done. And you'd be able to add or remove whole features, change the color scheme for the entire app, etc.

The only apps that AI may struggle with for a while are very complex enterprise web apps that require a lot of niche knowledge but eventually it'll be good at creating those as well.

Lastly, I think Chat GPT is already quite good at a lot of the stuff a PM does, even though it was not specifically designed for that. Imagine someone actually sets out to create an AI version of a PM. Coming up with requirements, competitive analysis, etc. I think AI would be very good at all of that.

You should ask AI to generate results on your graph! Just jokes 😂

Nice work! I do have to say I think you are underestimating how difficult web development is! Building simple landing pages could be replaced by UI but it would be almost impossible for AI to replace end-to-end web app projects! There is simply too much human input for development to be replaced!

The advent of industrialization in the 18th and 19th centuries brought significant changes to the way goods were produced, leading to the replacement of manual labor with machine-based manufacturing. As a result, many workers feared for their jobs and the future of their livelihoods. However, industrialization also created new job opportunities and contributed to economic growth and prosperity in the long run. it is the start of a new era...I hope Industry 5.0 will bring exciting job opportunities for all of us in the future.

I had chatgpt write React components for me and it seems decent, but generic and potentially buggy. I think you've convinced me to go the people skills route. 😊

I actually think that answering questions in a conversation is going to be taken over by AI a lot sooner than Mizko thinks. ChatGPT already gives more robust answers faster than a Google search. Teams already has dictation for recorded meetings. Is it really that hard to let an AI listen to the conversation and add input for questions asked? Especially if you could just interact with it like another person on the meeting...

Maybe AI is introduced and it could be a cookie cutter situation? From what I’ve used thus far it’s all from google just formatted really well. AI learns that’s what’s most interesting we don’t know how much it will learn and then when will it stop? Does it have an expiry date? Do they retire 😂 so many questions!!! That’s why I love UX research 🤙🏼 thinking forward i agree with your analysis well put together! Something AI I don’t think will be able to do especially speaking about the trust element from human to human. But maybe AI is reading this now and finds a solution how to build trust lol😢going down a rabbit hole! Great video!!!

We continue to be blind sighted by the future repeatedly. I think if anything that can be readily automated , then it is "leadership" and "strategy".
Technically what most leaders do is analyse , measure monitor, monitise, bully and give dramatic "talks". An AI system could definitely learn to be more analytic or more strategic and throw up dramatic language. We seem to heap a lump of moral and ethical burden upon "leadership" trusting them to do no wrong, yet there was the invasion of Iraq or Afghanistan for instance, only due to "leadership". Frankly if we had automated " Leadership" earlier we wouldn't have had those events. So once again lets not cocoon ourselves into believing that activities like leadership and strategy is ultra human to be automated. Perhaps there might be an issue of will, not that of technical capability.

I believe within the next few years AI will take over our industry, it's moving fast. Once they start training the Ai off massive data sets of (hopefully not dribble) it will start putting together solid complete designs, it's matter of time, it's not IF its WHEN. 100% going to be AI plugins that will generate you fully completed design systems within Figma, I've personally signed up for Betas for AI power web design tools they do everything for you.

I don't feel we will lose much work tbh, I feel the lower end of the stick is going to struggle the most, the client base most newer designer get are budget clients which will start using the tools themselves, DIY won't need someone to fix there mistakes anymore as AI will do it for $30 a month... But talented designers will have to master the AI world, as bigger clients will always get a professional as they don't have time, the biggest win card for everyone in design industry is TIME people just don't have it.

Hardest industry that will be his is web design industry, AI is already in works to build full website for you based off your inputs, with ChatGPT in the mix it will write your content as well. The people who invent this stuff will be rich... We won't...

I would argue that the future of design systems will be the more important design focus. Design systems as we understand them today as just a UI based design systems will no longer be the design systems of the future. The new design system will become based upon human psychology and human interaction and behaviour strategies rather than just a UI design system. Every designer will be able to build a complete design system with AI allowing designers to do the end-to-end user experience strategy to deliver products that are hyper-personalised with a complete branding strategy. Every design system built will be able to have generated code so developers can build products faster then ever before.

Design systems will also become more modular and flexible to adapt to the dynamic nature of human interaction. This will allow for more efficient and consistent designs that can change and adapt as user needs evolve.

Additionally, the use of artificial intelligence and machine learning in design systems will become more prevalent. This will enable designers to create more personalized and dynamic experiences for users, tailored to their individual needs and preferences.

I think there is a lot of opportunity in the design system field, design systems can al learn evolve and adapt fast. So as long as you don't get stuck in the mindset of thinking of a design system as just a UI system.

I do think the knowledge gained about ''design systems' will remain relevant in some ways: take a look at how design has evolved over the years and you see that there was always more work, no matter what new trend or solution came along. It's very likely we designers will have to adapt, but if you are willing todo so, there's probably always a job for a designer in one shape or another, it's just that the tools we use will change once more, and it will not be te last time. For one, if we can just focus on the look and feel and the usability and goals without fussing about an imperfection here or there, thatwould be wonderfull.

I do think that, yes, humans will still overlook AI. However, this is only going to further push the gate-keeping in design jobs as well as all white-collar jobs, because due to the AI, companies will need fewer humans on the work team and only hire a few in number to overlook the AI while most of the AI does the legwork that teams of 5 designers or so used to do. Inevitably those who get in will have egos the size of fkn mountains. Those who cannot get a job, which will be many, will be desperate for survival, that governments will inevitably have to introduce a UBI system.

As well as facilitation, I believe designers who are truly creative in nature and can hone in on their own facilitation style and skills will do extremely well. And be even more sought after then now. Very optimistic of our future. Great video
